Barbara Jean Meuer
A Funeral Mass was held Tuesday Dec. 29, 1998 at 10:30 a.m. for Barbara Jean Meuer at St. Jude Catholic Church. Offici- ating was Father Eric Lofgren.
Mrs. Meuer was born May 1, 1939 in New York and passed away December 23, 1998 in Mtn. Mesa.
She has been a resident of Bodfish for the past seven years. She was Vice Commander of the DAV in North Highlands, Calif. and Girl Scout Leader for many years, and worked as the activity director in nursing homes for many years. She spent a lot of her time helping other people and was also a volunteer for the Forest Service. She was a avid Yankees fan.
Barbara is survived by her husband Ted of 42 years, and her daughter and son-in-law Marie and Rick Chamberland II of Harrogate, England, son and daughter-in-law Paul and Theresa Meuer of San Antonio, Tex. and son and daughter-in- law Bernard Zink Sr. of Sacra- mento, four grandchildren, Jen- nifer, Ricky, Mark and Jessica and four sisters, Patricia, Mary, Helen and Laretta and two broth- ers, Bernard Jr. and Jonathan.

Ruth Lillian Ridgway
Ruth Lillian Ridgway passed away December 30, 1998 in Mtn. Mesa after a short illness. She was born December 29, 1914 in Des Moines, lowa.
There were no services held as Ruth had requested. She was burried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, Calif. next to her parents.
Ruth moved to California from lowa when she was 6 years old
and graduated from Lincoln High School in Los Angeles after which she attended four years of Bible College. She worked in the air- craft industry during WWII then she was a nursery school teacher for many years.
She moved here to the Kern River Valley from. Clear Lake, Calif. 22 years ago.
She is survived by her sister Myrtle in Northern California, and her many friends in the valley.

Boda Yates
Boda was born to her parents Oscar and Nancy on May 20, 1933 in West Virginia. Boda was raised with a strong belief in fam- ily and faith. She brought up her family to believe in those very same ideals. Throughout her life, she worked hard to provide for herself and her family. In 1990 Boda moved to the Kern River Valley to be with her family. Here, her family was able to give her the same loving care and com- passion that she was always able to give. Her family diligently cared for Boda as she grew ill in her twilight years. But on December 17, 1998, Boda heard the calling of her maker, and went home to be with the Lord. She was 66 years, 7 months and 27 days old. Though Boda is gone from us, her loving tenderness, care, and compassion that she provided for so many will live on forever.
Boda Yates leaves behind four very special daughters, June, Brenda, Tish and Dorothy. She is also survived by her grandchil- dren, Nicole, Alex, Katie, Amber and Michael. She has two sur- viving sisters, Rachel and Alberta. Boda's husband Frank preceded her in passing in 1986.

Gertrude Pauline Roberts
A Mass for Christian burial was held Friday December 4, 1998 at St. Mary of the Assump- tion Catholic Church in St. Louis Mo. for Gertrude Pauline Rob- erts of Ridgecrest. Interment fol- lowed at Calvary Cemetery, St. Louis.
Gert was born December 4, 1907 in St. Louis Missouri and died November 29, 1998 in Lancaster, Calif., after a short illness. She was 90 years old.
Gert was a former 36 year resident of the Kern River Val- ley, a member of St. Jude's Catholic Church in Wofford Heights.
She is survived by her brother Joseph Sick of Bowling Green, Missouri, two nieces and two nephews and her friend and care giver Merle Jenkins.

George Lee Walter
A memorial service was held Friday January 9, 1999 at 11 a.m. at the Elks Lodge for George Lee Walter. Mr. Walter was born June 19, 1927 in San Pedro, Calif., and passed away January 4, in Bakersfield, Calif.
He served four years in the U.S. Marine Corps and worked as a terminal manager for a mo- lasses company in Long Beach, Calif. He and his late wife, .Vir- ginia moved to Wofford Heights in 1989 from San Pedro, Calif. He was a member of BPO Elks #2358 of Wofford Heights, and a avid hunter and fisherman.
He is survived by his sons, Gary and David Walter, step- daughter and son-in-law; Col- leen and Randy Jenkins, step- son and wife Mike and Linda Brinkley and grandchildren, Letitia, Tamara, Brooke, Mat- thew, Melissa and Ryan.
Brother Robert Walter, nephew James and nieces Daye and Paula. Brother-in-law and wives, Donald and Gerri Headley, Raymond and Mary Headley and Gene and Linda Headley.

Margaret Catherine Smith
Marge was born July 25, 1922 in Boston, Mass. She moved with her parents and brother Carl to So. Calif., where they resided in Monrovia. After high school Marge moved to the South Bay area. She met her first husband and together had six children. She divorced and later married her second husband and had one more son. Together they moved to Kernville in 1962 and bought what used to be called the Walker's Inn near the bridge.
Marge kept herself busy. She was secretary for the Lady Elks, as well as a Charter Member. She also was among the first of our local Sweet Adelines. Later, she involved herself with a C.B. base station and volunteered her time with Chl. 9 REACT group.
Marge was preceded in death by her husband Charles ( Smitty) Smith, and sons Ralph and Carl. She leaves in passing, sons: Robert of San Diego, Richard of Lawton, Okla., David of Wilmington, Calif., and Dan of Kernville. Daughters: M.C. (Snooky) Magness of Los Lunas, N.M., and Sandy Logston of Corning, Calif. Marge was also blessed with 12 grandchildren and several wonderful great- grandchildren.
According to Marge's wishes, there will be a small private fam- ily get together, however no for- mal services.

Robert John Katzenmeyer
Private arrangements were made for Robert John Katzenmeyer who passed away Jan. 13, 1999 in Bodfish. Mr. Katzenmeyer was born May 21, 1928 in Minneapolis, Minn., and lived in the San Fernando Valley for many years, and worked for Litton Industry for 20 years and then owned his own truck and delivered moblehomes for about 3 years before retiring, then mov- ing to Bodfish. He enjoyed hunt- ing and he trained his own bird dogs.
Robert is survived by his wife of 48 years, lone Katzenmeyer and his son Matthew Katzenmeyer of Sunland, Calif., his daughter Michele Brandon and grandson Christopher Bran- don of Washington.

Winona Opal Davis
Graveside services were held Saturday January 16, 1999 at 10 a.m. for Winona Opal Davis, of- ficiating was Pastor Floyd Castillo.
Mrs. Davis was born March 15, 1921 in Paoli, Okla. to Mr. and Mrs. James White (Malie Bleer) and passed away Jan. 10, 1999 in Mtn. Mesa.
Winona was a very sweet, gentle and stubborn lady. She
enjoyed visits from family and had moved to Lake Isabella from Ada, Okla, in 1997 to be near them. She loved to play games with everyone and enjoyed quilt- ing and reading.
She is survived by her hus- band Leonard E. Davis of Lake' Isabella, her daughters and son- in-laws, Norita and James Lockhart, Glenda and Stanton Lowry, sister Mitta Simpson and - brothers, Ronald Dean Bleer, Deion Bleer, and Arley Bleer, grandchildren, Mike Lockhart, Cindy Lowry, Melody Arnold, Mitchell Lockhart, Mark Lockhart and Tim Lowry, also 9 great- grandchildren.
She was very much loved and will be missed by all who knew her.

Vivian Margaret Wise
Memorial services were held Saturday Jan. 23, 1999 at 2 p.m. at Valley Mortuary Chapel for Vivian Margaret Wise, who passed away after a long illness on Jan. 18, 1999 at the Nursing Center in Mtn. Mesa.
Mrs. Wise was born Feb. 10, 1920 in Detroit, Mich., and has lived in Wofford Heights for 24 years. She enjoyed playing " bridge and painting pictures of the hills in our valley.
She is survived by her hus- band of 52 years, Fred C. Wise of Wofford Heights; sons David (and Jerri Wise) of Norwalk and Jeffrey Wise of Los Angeles; five grandchildren and three great- grandchildren; brother Robert Olsen of Wofford Heights; and sisters Doris Bellair of Detroit, Mich. and Mickie Ranken, of · Lakewood, Calif.

Frances Mae Larsen
Frances Mae Larsen passed away Jan. 18, 1999 in Torrance, Calif. She was born July 5, 1923 in Omaha, Neb.
Fran was preceded in death by her husband Ray, a retired Los Angeles City Fireman. They were long-time residents of Gardena, Calif., before retiring to Wofford Heights in 1968. Fran was a dispatcher for the Steam Fitters Union Local #250. She loved to play bingo throughout the valley. She is survived by her son, Larry (Jerryl) Larsen. Ser- vices were private.

George Lee Walter

Stephen Phillips
Stephen Randolph (Clary) Phillips, a former resident of Kern Valley, died Sat. Jan. 16, 1999 at Lancaster Community Hospital. He was 45.
Stephen was born at St. Anthony's Hospital in Oklahoma City, Okla., on Nov. 18, 1953. He was dedicated at the First Church of the Nazarene in Bethany, Okla. The family moved to El Segundo when he was two years old, and he became a member of the Hermosa Beach Church of the Nazarene. He attended Hawthorne Christian School in Hawthorne. He also attended Crenshaw Christian Elementary in Torrance; Leona Cox Elemen- tary and Sierra Vista Junior High; and Saugus and Leusinger High School in Lawndale.
He was active in Little League in both. Torrance and Saugus. Stephen won such awards as . Outstanding Player of the Year and Pitcher of the Year.
Even as a young boy, he was a caring person. He donated his time to children at the Shriners Circuses, earning prizes for them with his pitching skills. He was also with the Boy Scouts of America and enjoyed motor- cycles and automobile races. At the time of his death he was teaching the Safari Club at his home church, Calvary Assembly of God, Ridgecrest.
Stephen's name was changed to Clary at a young age, but he returned to the Phillips name at the birth of his first child.
Previously, Stephen was a manager of the Bud Eyre Chevrolet Body Shop. He was employed at George's Auto Body Shop, Ridgecrest, as an auto body man.
Stephen is survived by his wife, Brenda, of Ridgecrest; mother Bess C. Clary of Onyx; son Ryan Scott Phillips of Hawthorne; daughters Heather Lynn Phillips and Krista Lee Phill- ips, both of Ridgecrest; brothers Stanley L. Clary of Onyx and Wallace "Corky" G. Clary of Bishop; sister Lorraine Mccullough of Lakewood, Colo., niece Jessica R. Clary of Bakers- field; and nephews Austin Mccullough and Julian Mccullough, both of Lakewood, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his father, Julius J. Phillips; step- father Wallace G. Clary; grand- parents Edmund Maxwell and May "Moon" Cackler and Julius
Hunter and Winifred Pauline Phillips.
Visitation was at Holland and Lyons Chapel with funeral ser- vices following at Calvary As- sembly of God, 800 W. Upjohn Avenue, Ridgecrest.

Robert Franklin Johnson
Robert Franklin Johnson was born on Nov. 4, 1916 in Fort Abercrombie, N. D. His youth was spent in North Dakota, and later in South Dakota, where he worked as part of the CCC camp there. In the 1930s he moved to Califor- nia. On Aug. 8, 1940 he married Lois Margaret Berg.
Bob worked for the Edison Company in Inglewood, Calif., then for Standard Oil until he en- tered the U.S. armed services where he served in anti-aircraft during World War II. After the war he and his brothers were in the service station and Ford mechani- cal business until 1966. Owning and operating Johnson's Sport- ing Goods for 12 years was the fulfillment of a dream. He loved the valley and meeting its people. Then Bob's hearing failed so that his operating the business was no longer possible. The Johnsons celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1990. Bob and L'ois are charter members of the Shep- herd of the Hills Lutheran Church.
Bob died at the age of 82 years on Dec. 18, 1998 in Shafter, Calif. Mourning him are his wife Lois; their two children, Diane and hus- band Philip Aune of Redding, Calif., and Mark R. Johnson of · - Kernville; five grandchildren, Todd Aune, Jennifer and Jessica Johnson, Alissa Aune, and Laura and husband Michael Haskell; and many loving and caring neph- ews and nieces; and all of you who are here today, along with those who can be here only in spirit.
He is interred at the Kern River Valley Cemetery, in anticipation of the resurrection.

OBITUARIES
Dora B. Weldon
Funeral services were held Saturday Jan. 30, 1999 at 10 a.m. at Valley Mortuary Chapel for Dora B. Weldon. Interment followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Bakersfield. Officiating was Pastor Jim Williams of Rexland Acres Baptist Church.
Dora was born June 26, 1928 to John and Mary Weldon, and passed on Jan. 24, 1999.
Dora was raised in Kelso Val- ley and attended school in River- side, Calif. Frank and Dora Manwell raised nine loving chil- dren together. She is survived by Doris Wolf of South Dakota, Linda Estrada of Bakersfield, Joyce Perez of Ridgecrest, Walter Manwell and Glenda Manwell of Lake Isabella, Shirley Manwell of Mtn. Mesa, and Floyd Manwell of Weldon.
Mom leaves behind 12 grand- children and 2 great-grandchil- dren. Also three surviving sis- ters, June, Lena and Ollie.
Mom is preceded in death by her husband Frank Manwell, sons Frankie and Arthur Manwell, a grandson, Louie Perez, and four brothers.
Mom will be dearly missed by her children and all who knew her, also her special friends. Most of all Mom loved being with her children and grandchildren.

Olive Estelle Cronin
Private arrangements were made for Olive Estelle Cronin who passed away on Jan. 22, 1999.
Olive was born in Bakersfield, on Sept. 6, 1917 and worked for the school district before WWII where she met her husband John T. Cronin. They then moved to the Bay Area until returning to the area and moving to Bodfish in 1978. Olive enjoyed bowling
and was on the bowling leagues in Mtn. Mesa for many years.
She is preceded in death by her husband John and is sur- vived by her son John O. Cronin and grandson John M. Cronin, both of Los Altos, Calif .; two sis- ters Idie Graham, Gertrude Braden, and many. nieces and nephews.

1 Charles David Friand
Charles David Friand entered into eternal rest Jan. 17, 1999 in- Mtn. Mesa.
"Chuck" was born in Hesdries, Ore., 1931. He and his wife Elene raised three children and owned and operated Young's Radiator Shop for 35 years in the San Fernando Valley. After that they retired to the Kern Valley in 1990.
Chuck's wife cared for him during his lengthy illness until he returned home to his Heavenly Father's care.
Chuck will always be loved and missed by many whom he touched in life. His loving, honor- able ways live on in our hearts.
Chuck is survived by his wife Elene; daughters LaNell and Linda; son Dale; grandchildren Nicole, Angela, Sean, George III, Michael, Stephanie, Steven, Timmy and Addy; and great- grandchildren Nicholas, Ronald, Éricia, and one yet unborn.
He is also survived by broth- ers Dale and Jim; sisters Evelyn, Ruth and Joene; many nieces and nephews; and sons-in-law George and Gilbert.
Memorial services were held at the Elks Lodge in Wofford Heights.

Dora Benepe
Dora Margaret (Phillips) Benepe, 81, of Hazleton, Ind. passed away Saturday evening at her home.
She was a member of Eagles, Moose, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars auxil- iaries, Hazleton Lions and Rebekah Lodge. She was a member of United Methodist Church.
Surviving are a son, Joe Earl Brackin of Hazleton; a sister, Edith Pearl Hurt of Lake Isa- bella, Calif .; a brother, Joe Phill- ips of Hobart; five granddaugh- ters, Paula Pinkstaff, Pamela Duncan, Kyela Jones, Karla Brackin and Marla Rollo; three great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Her husband, James, preceded her in death.
Services were held on Wednesday, at Colvin Funeral Home, with burial in Shiloh Cem- etery.
Dora was a resident of Lake Isabella for 20 years.
Lee R. Waldrop
Lee R. Waldrop, 76 of Elizabethtown, Ky., died Fri., Feb. 5, 1999 at Hardin Memorial Hos- pital.
He was a native of Lawton, Okla. Maj. Waldrop retired from the United States Air Force after serving in WWII and the Korean War. He also retired from Civil Service, 2nd ROTC Region at Ft. Knox. he was a World Cham- pion Payload Scale 1957 and 1958, a charter member of the Fort Knox Retired Officers Asso- ciation and a member of the American Legion.
Lee was preceded in death by his parents, Sidney and Hattie Waldrop who were residents of Onyx from 1940 until their deaths. He is survived by his wife, Joan McHenry Waldrop of Elizabethtown; his children, Jeff Waldrop of Tulare, Calif., Kurt Waldrop of Bakersfield, and Vicki Meadows of Bakersfield, and their spouses; a special friend, their mother, Elizabeth Waldrop of Lake Isabella, and seven grandchildren.

Eugene V. Victorine
Eugene V. Victorine passed away on Jan. 29, 1999 in Se- attle, Wash. at his daughter's home. Mr. Victorine (Vic) was a longtime resident of Lake Isa- bella. He became ill in 1996 with cancer and remained at his home in Lake Isabella until he was un- able to remain alone. He loved fishing, Lake Isabella and his many friends. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and a retired postal worker. His family thanks all of his many friends that helped while he was ill. Their help and compassion is so greatly appre- ciated. A special thanks to the Herroms for all of their help with transportation to and from medi- cal appointments, and their faith- ful friendship.

Wesley A. Rice
Funeral services were held for Wesley A. Rice on Feb. 2, 1999 at Valley Mortuary Chapel with graveside services by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 7665 at Kern Valley Cemetery. Services were conducted by Reverend Floyd R. Castillo.
Wesley was born on Dec. 7, 1917 in Los Animas, Colo. to Walter and Rose Rice. He had two younger sisters, Opal and Jewel. When he was five years old, the family moved to Califor- nia where he was to grow up and eventually attend Fremont High School. While in high school, he played the trumpet and was a member of the USC Marching Band and was selected for the Los Angeles All City Marching Band. He also won an American Legion Scholastic Award for an essay he wrote.
Wes worked in a defense job during World War II, but on May 30, 1945, he decided to enlist anyway and so he went down to the Navy Recruiting Office and signed up in the Navy, or so he thought. Someone pointed to him and some others and said ... "You are in the Army ... " and so he spent the next 18 months in the Army, being honorably dis- charged on Oct. 7, 1946.
He was active in his commu- nity, first as Reserve Police Of- ficer in El Monte where they lived for 27 years, and a Life Member of the Veterans' of Foreign Wars, and a charter member of the Moose Lodge here in Kern Val- ley. He was a hunter and fisher- man, an avid reader and was always willing to help others.
After his service to his coun- try, Wes began to work for the L.A. City School District as a steamfitter where he continued until disabilities took over and he had to retire in 1972. Wes and his wife Lillian moved to the Kern Valley in early 1973 where they have lived until his death on Jan. 27, 1999.
Wes is survived by Lillian, his wife of more than 62 years, their sons, Wesley and his wife Eileen and their five children Laura, Lisa, Lynda, Leiann and Jenifer and between them, they have 11 grandchildren; son John and his wife Christine and their two daughters, Jennifer and Jessica and John's other children Wesley, Jason and Donna. John has seven grandchildren, mak- ing a total of 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren for Wes and Lillian. He is also sur- vived by his two sisters, Opal Monders of Van Nuys and Jewel Bolton of Salem, Ore. as well as his cousin, Cora Baldwin of Lake Isabella and many nephews and nieces.
