Chino Rivero


Chino Rivero was born on April 23, 1927 and passed away on March 19, 2000, at the age of 72.


Chino was a part-time val- ley resident of Bodfish for many years. He always loved the Kern Valley and called it "God's Country."


Viewing and Mass was held at Douglas Mortuary in Hawthorne! Chino was laid to rest with military honors at Riv- erside National Cemetery.


He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Isabel; son George Rivero and daughter-in-law Teri; grandsons Bryan and Nick of Simi, and many friends in the Kern Valley:


Ella Marie Tomlinson


Funeral services will be held today, April 5, 2000, at 1 p.m. in the Betty Mish Memo- rial Chapel in Oildale for Ella Marie Tomlinson:


Ella was born Jan. 7. 1909 in Chicago and passed away March 30, 2000 in Simi Valley .- Ella is survived by her chil- dren, Shirley M. Wilkie, John E. Tomlinson and Robert P. Tomlinson, sister Harriett Hansen; brother Wilbert Virmond; and numerous grandchildren and great- grandchildren. She was an active member of the 55+ Club in Lake Isabella and the Shep- herd of the Hills Lutheran Church Dorcas Society.


Interment will be at the Kern River Valley Cemetery in Wofford Heights. Pallbearers will be Frank Wilkie, Jr., Scott Wilkie, Jeff Wilkie, Mark Atkins, Frank Wilkie, Sr. and Ryan Wilkie

Arthur (Orth) Spencer


Arthur (Orth) Spencer en- tered into eternal rest at home in Southlake on March 22, 2000. He was 91


Arthur was born in Hebron, Ill. on Feb. 5, 1909 to George and Musa Spencer, He went to school in Hebron and Woodstock, III. In 1930 he met and married Elizabeth (Betty) Shepard. They were married for 70 years. They came to California in 1949, where he worked for the So- lar Corp. as an aircraft ma- chinist. Arthur and Betty moved to Lake Isabella in 1972 and retired to the Southlake area. He was a member of the Kernville Meth- - odist Church. Arthur was an active traveler of the West," , and loved go camping.


Arthur is survived by his wife, Betty Spencer; son Charles and wife of Bonita, Calif .; grandson "Paul;" granddaughter Nicole; and great-grandchildren Charles and Christine of San Diego. Arthur will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.


Memorial services were held at the "Masonic Lodge where he was a member. A private service followed at the Rose Garden at.Kern River Valley Cemetery in Wofford Heights. The service was conducted by Pastor John Carpenter of the Methodist Church of Kernville.

Judith Ann Mercier


Funeral services were held. March 30, 2000 at Valley Mor- tuary Chapel for Judith Ann Mercier. Officiating was her cousin Pastor 5 Jerry Thordsen.


Judy was born Nov. 15, 1938 in Austin, Minn. and passed away March 27,2000 after a long illness. She was a respiratory therapist for many years.


She was a member of the Sweet Adelines and was past president. She played the vio- lin for many years. She moved to the Kern Valley in 1976 and lived here until 1989 be- fore moving to Hemet. She came back to the Valley in 1999


She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Lucille and Howard Peterson; broth- ers David and Caroline Thordsen of Buena Park, John and Charlotte Thordsen of Colorado, and Joe and Shirley Thordsen of Simi Val- ley and Kelly Thordsen of Simi Valley; daughter and son-in- law Leslie and Greg Sayre:of Henderson, Nev .; son Mike Mercier of Ventura; two grandsons; one granddaugh- ter; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and neph- ews.

Frank Willard Moritz


Memorial services were held April 1; 2000 at the Elks Lodge in Wofford Heights for Frank Willard Moritz, Frank passed away on March 28, 2000 at Kern Valley Hospital of a heart attack. He was born March 24, 1930 in Evanston, III. Mr. Moritz was a veteran of the Korean War and retired from North American Rockwell after 35

years. He was a member of the Lancaster Elks Lodge No. 1625 and an associate member of the Kern Valley Elks Lodge No. 2358. He was also a mem- ber of the Kern Valley Moose Lodge No. 1297. He was a volunteer at the fish hatchery ... His love of the community and friendships he made here were evident in his volunteerism and love for the people whose lives he touched. In Loving Memory of William Anthony Thompson II


William Anthony Thompson II, AKA "Budman", Breadmaa", 72, of Kernville, CA, born April 13, 1928 in El Monte, Calif., died Tuesday, March 21, 2000, af Kern Valley Hospital, Mt. Mesa, Calif. Mr. Thompson was an Electrical Technician in the sero- space industry. He retired from the Librascope Division of the Singer Corporation. He served in the Navy and was a WWII veteran.


Mr. Thompson enjoyed fishing, bread making and the many friends he made in the town he loved and called home, Kernville. He will be missed dearly by his son, daughter-in-law and granddaugh- ter, William Roger Thompson, Debra Paladino Thompson, and Skylar Lynn Thompson of East Lyme, Conn., his daughter, son-in-law and former wife, Tammye Lyon Hartley, Scott William Hartley, and Joy Thompson, of Washington, Penn.


There are many dear friends that will feel his absence. He was blessed to have such friends as well as his two surviving brothers and one surviving sister. The passing of his younger sister, Patricia Boucher, on March 23, 2000, has brought deeper sorrow to the family.


There was a luncheon held in "Bud's" honor, given by George and Darlene Randall on Sunday, March 25, 2000. His two surviving children give thanks to the Randalls and all of his friends for their support and friendship.

William Marvin Culwell, Jr.


Graveside services will be held on April 13, 2000 at 11.a.m. at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, Calif for William Marvin Culwell, Jr. Officiating will be: Pastor Charles McMahill. Bill passed away on April 4. 2000.


Bill moved to Weldon in 1955 after retiring from Lockheed. He enjoyed fishing, feeding the birds and was an avid bird watcher. He also enjoyed camping and traveling.


Bill is survived by Larue and Donna Jo Lumpkin of Weldon; sister-in-law Donna Nielsen, sis- ter-in-law Dorothy Cato and hus- band George of Weldon; grand- daughters Ruth Ann Berkemeier and Kathleen Randles, grandson James Edward Lumpkin and five great- grandchildren.

-Funeral services were held April 6, 2000 at the First Baptist Church in Lake Isabella for Lloyd Hubert Allen of Mountain Mesa. Officiat- ing was Pastor Eric Malamma.


Mr. Allen was born Nov. 25, 1908 in Farmington, Ark. and passed away on April 2, 2000 in Mountain Mesa. He worked as a welder and pipe fitter for Ofco Construction for over 34 years. f. He and his wife of 49 years. Mar-


guerite, moved to the Kern River Valley 38 years ago from Pasa-" dena. Lloyd enjoyed going fish- ing.


He was preceded in death by his wife in 1999. He is survived by his .. step-daughter and husband Doris and Robert Griswald of Mountain Mesa; son Hubert M. Allen of Ari- zona; daughters Doris June Dillander and Dixie Lee Akeres, both of Oregon; and many grand- children and great-grandchildren."

Frank O. Hernandez


Private arrangements were made for Frank O. Hernandez. who passed away on April 5, 2000 at his home in Lake Isabella. Mr. Hernandez was born on Nov. 16, 1928 in Los Angeles.


He moved here 16 years ago after retiring from the Local No .. 108 as a sheet metal worker. He was a member of the Moose, VFW, Kern Valley Golf Course and the Bodfish Beamers. He en- joyed fishing, camping and going to Las Vegas and Laughlin. Also pitching horseshoes, and he had many trophies to show for that.


He is survived by his wife, Jean Hernandez of Lake Isabella; son Gary Hernandez of Bodfish; daugh- ter Loraine Mitchener of Lake Isabella; step-son Robert Knemeyer of Weldon; brothers Fernie Hernandez of Lake Isabella and Felex Hernandez of Whittier; sis- ters Mary Lou Montoya of Havilah and Margaret Sandoval of Whittier; . six grandchildren and one great- grandchild:

Kenneth Doyle Loser


Kenneth Loser (Kenny) was born in Orange on Oct. 24, 1968 and went to be with his Lord on Feb. 12, 2000. He passed away at Desert Hospital in Palm Springs where his last days were spent with his family by his side.


Kenny lived in Wofford Heights and Kernville for the last nine years of his life, but went camping on the Kem since the age of five. He vowed that when he grew up he would. someday live there in Kernville; and so he did. He loved the out- doors, the river, the lake and all God's creations. He loved life and lived accordingly. He was creative as an artist and loved dancing. He is now with his life partner Joe Wagner in heaven with our Lord. They shall remain in our hearts and prayers forever.


Kenny is survived by his fa- ther and mother David and Juanita Loser; his brother and sister-in- ław Brady and Kimberly Loser; his niece and nephews Amanda, Brady, Dustin and Cassidy Loser, all of Yucca Valley; his special sisters and brother Lori, Kim, Beth and David and all their fami- lies; his aunts Tamara Speed and Jean MeClenon and all their fami- lies; his uncles Arthur O'Dell an'd Kenneth Loser and all their fami- lies; his grandparents Eva Gaston and Tressia Talarko; and all the families of Bruce and Shirley Wagner that he so loved; his dear friend Bruce and Lori Woodruff; as well as many, many friends who loved him and will miss him.


A special service was given in Palm Springs for the family and . he will be laid to rest in the moun- tains he so loved. So please join us in prayers and remembrances of Kenneth Loser.


Frank Willard Moritz


Memorial services were held April 1, 2000 at the Elks Lodge in Wofford Heights for Frank Willard Moritz. Frank passed away on March 28, 2000 at Kern Valley Hospital of a heart attack. Nathan E. Whitmire


· Nathan (Nate) E. Whitmire was born in Missouri on Nov. 19, 1918 and died in Mountain Mesa on March 31, 2000.


Nate served in the United States Airm from 1942 to 1946. He was . in the South Pacific theater of war. Nate received. the Purple. Heart and other medals during his service to his country.


Nate was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was also a long time member of the Royal Order of Moose.


Nate retired from the Mainte- nance Department of the Lancaster, Calif., school district. Nate loved teaching Bible study, Sunday School, the Weldon South- era Baptist Church, his family and the United States of America. He- loved gardening with his beloved wife; Shirley, and excelled in any kind of woodworking.


Nate married Shirley Stamps on March 5, 1987 and soon after moved to the Valley Estates com- munity of Weldon, where he and Shirley were active in the Homeowners Association.


Nate worked four years with. the U.S. Forest Service in the Seniors Program. Nate is survived. by his wife, Shirley; a sister, Agnes Armistead of Missouri; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Lola and Rusty Thomas of Weldon; his children, Barbara and David Montgomery, Ron and Becky Stamps of Kernville and Dean and Denise Stamps of Rosamond. Nate is also survived .. by eight grandchildren, one great- grandchild and many nieces and nephews residing in Missouri.


Reverend Bill Lewis will be officiating at the memorial ser- vices. In lieu of flowers, dona- tions may be made in memory of Nate to the Weldon Southern Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1441, Weldon, Calif. 93283-1441.

Jack C. Anderson


Graveside services were held in the Kern River Cem- etery; Wofford Heights, on April 14, 2000 for Kern Valley resi- dent Jack C. Anderson. He passed away April 10, 2000 in Ridgecrest, Calif.


Jack is survived by his wife of 53 years, Clara Marie Malone-Anderson; a daughter and her husband, Cheryl and Tom Kramer; a son and his wife, Gary and Lori Anderson; his grandchildren, Joe and Michelle Tweedell of Jonesboro, Ga., Eric Galvin of Sacramento and Corbin and Carly Anderson of Spokane, Wash .; two great-grandsons, Austin and Brady Tweedell of Jonesboro, Ga; and his mother-in-law, Marie Malone, who turned 95 in December 1999. Those who preceded him in death were his parents, brothers and sisters, and his


sons, Jack Jr. and Eric Bruce. Jack was a World War II veteran and participated in the Normandy invasion He was employed with Southern Cali- fornia Edison in 1947 in Kernville. He retired in 1981 from the Thousand Oaks sub- station and then returned home to Kernville.


Jack was a devoted hus- band to his wife of 53 years and a devoted father, He loved his family and was very close to all who had the gift of know- ing him. He took pleasure in hunting, fishing and playing golf. He was a member, of the. Conejo Valley Masonic Lodge, the Al Maleken Shriners in Thousand Oaks, and the VFW Kern Valley Post 7665.


Donations to the Kern Val- ley Youth Center are preferred by the family.

Fred Raymond McCoy (The Quiet Man)


After a long battle with Parkinson's disease, Fred McCoy entered eternal life in the early morning hours of April 16, 2000, at his home with his wife Irene and his daughter Betty at his side. He was 87 years of age.


Services were held at Val- ley Mortuary in Lake Isabella on April 21 at 11:30 a.m. Pas- tor Jim Williams officiated, with special. tributes by his three grandchildren


Fred was born in Kentucky and as a young boy moved to Texas where he grew up on the family farm. There he learned the country values of hard work, honesty, integrity and a love of family and coun- try. Before moving to Califor- nia and establishing a home in Downey, Fred moved to New Mexico where he met Ruth Irene Knight, the love of his life. They spent several years. in New Mexico, where Fred worked for the U.S. govern- ment. After WWII, they moved with their daughter Betty to California. Fred and his brother then established McCoy Equipment Co., servicing and leasing heavy equipment.


Known among his family and peers as "The Quiet Man," he was respected for his sense of duty and the values he lived by and passed on to his beloved grandchildren, teaching them "a man's word is as good as a written contract," "hard work never harmed anyone," "you can learn more by listening than by talking," and more. He loved to hunt and enjoyed the great outdoors. Due to his ill-" ness, he never got to explore the beauty of the Kern River Valley. He also enjoyed spec- tator sports and was a real fan of the old Los Angeles Hams.

Fred is survived by his wife, Irene; daughter Betty Quinn and husband Jack of Wofford Heights; grandchildren Michael Mccullough of Simi Valley, Kevin Quinn of Chi- cago, and Julie Hart and hus- band Michael of San Luis Obispo; great-grandchildren Tracy and Kelsie Hart and Mikayla Mccullough, and many nieces and nephews. He was the last survivor of his four brothers and sisters. He willbe: greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Private intern- ment was at Rose Hills Memo- rial Park on April 24, 2000.

Theodore William Stortz


Ted Stortz was born on Feb. 26, 1915 in Chicago to parents Theodore and Anna Stortz. He : entered into rest on April 19, 2000, at the age of 85, in Bakersfield.


Ted's greatest passion was on the water under blue skies with a fishing pole. He also loved little kids and was good to one and all. Ted also liked to travel. Ted gave love to every- one that he knew, and received love in return. He never met a stranger without talking to that person:

Robert Allen Mehl


A memorial service was held on April 22, 2000 at the First Baptist Church in Lake Isabella for Robert Allen Mehl.


Robert was born June 21, .. 1937 in Dubuque, lowa and passed away on April 17,2000 in Bakersfield. Robert had been coming to the Valley since 1958. After retiring six years ago he moved to the Kern River Valley. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and golfing. He was a member of the Eagles and also the First Baptist Church of Lake Isabella, which he joined three years ago. Robert was a great guy, always helping everyone, making people laugh and en- joying life.


Robert is survived by his wife, Brenda; son Dave Mehl of Rancho Cucamonga; daughter Selina Mehl of Westwood; son Mark Sanger of Laguna Hills: grandchildren

Esther Linn Hood


Esther Linn Hood passed - Shirley was preceded in death


away in the Beverly" Health" Center in Ridgecrest on April 28, 2000 at the age of 74.


She was born in Lowell, Mass. on Feb. 11, 1926. Esther was raised by her adoptive parents and spent her youth in China. She lived in Kern County for 50 years. Esther was married to Herbert P. Hood, who preceded her in death. Esther's last two em- ployers were China Lake Na- val Weapons Center and as a waitress at EI Vaquero restau- rant in Wofford Heights.


Esther will be remembered by her granddaughter Deanna Culbreth of Mill Springs, N.C. and her very close, daughter- like family and friends Pat and Dave Bavier of Weldon and very close friends John and Lake Isabella Funeral Home.


Kathy Trigg, who at this time are at Guatanamo Bay in Cuba.


Esther was loved and will be missed by all who knew her.

Shirley Gladys Downie


Shirley Downie passed away quietly in her sleep in Mountain Mesa on May 3, 2000 at the age of 78 after a long illness.


She was born St. Paul, Minn. on July 30, 1921. Shirley mar- ried William Downie in 1942


and they moved to the Kern River Valley in the mid-1970s. by her husband of 55 years in 1997: She was preceded in death by two children as well.


She is survived by her sis- ter-in-law Mildred Milstead of Garden Grove; a cousin, Jean Breslin of Las Vegas; and her many friends in the local area. Shirley was a member of the Order of the Golden Slipper, Kaph chapter, the Ladies of the Nile and the South Fork Woman's Club. Even in her illness she remained kind to everyone. She always had a smile and a good word for ev- eryone when she was asked how she was, with a big smile and a "fine." We will miss this very special lady:

Hartsell Laverne Davidson Stockton


Hartsell Laverne Davidson Stockton of La Crescenta passed away May 6, 2000, at 72 years of age, în Burbank.


Visitation was May 10 at the Croley Funeral Home in Gilmer, Texas. Services were held May 11, 2000 at Antioch Baptist Church with Elder C. L. Goff officiating. Interment was at Grice Cemetery, Upshur County, Texas. Pallbearers were: Cliff Capehart, Matthew Dulion, Michael R. Dulion, Ivan P. Medina, Lance Medina and Sean Medina.


Hartsell Laverne Davidson Stockton's occupation was a singer and was born August 28, 1927 in Upshur County:


Survivors include son Clifford Capehart of Hendersonville, Tenn .; daugh- ters Darly Dulion of La Crescenta and Melody Medina of Wills Point, Tex .; sister Loretta Sheffield of Wills Point, Tex .; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service was held May 13, 2000 at the Family Life Center in Wofford Heights for Lee Christopher Orrick, who passed away on May 9, 2000 .* in Mountain Mesa after a long illness. Lee was the widow of Roy Orfick, prior owner : Kernville Moving and Storage, and a longtime resident of the Kern River Valley ..


Lee was born on May 11, : 1932 in Clovis, N.M. She en- joyed dancing, cooking, cro- cheting and collecting dolls.

Private arrangements were made for Margaret Seamon, who passed away at her home in Lake Isabella May 7, 2000 after a short illness.


Margaret was born July 22, 1931 in Philadelphia. She moved to the Kern River Val- ley in 1981 from. New Jersey. She enjoyed cooking and gar- dening:


Margaret is survived by her husband of 40 years Robert L. Seamon; son and daughter- in-law Robert and Jaylynn of New Jersey; daughter and son- in-law Karen and Dennis De Bota of Pennsylvania; two grandchildren; one great- grandchild; and three sisters. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Dean O. Terry


Dean Terry passed away in his home in Havilah on May 6, 2000, with his wife and daugh- ters at his side. Dean was born in Cedar Glades, Ark: to his parents Joseph and Alma Terry on Sept. 14, 1927.


At the tender age of. 17 he joined the Navy and went to serve his country. Dean was proud of the time he spent serv- ing in the Navy.


Dean and his wife, Ineil, moved to Havilah four years ago, and enjoyed their home high up on the mountainside. He loved to hunt and fish.


Dean was a loving and kind. person, a real joy to be around. He is survived by his wife, inell, of Havilah; daughters Connie L. Kerly of Kinsely, Kan., Dena M. Tanner and husband Peter of Camarillo, Carolyn L. Terry of Seattle, and Laurinda K. Meade of Pasadena; sons Michael E. Terry of Acton, Jo- seph D. Terry of Moorpark and Larry Smith of Crestline; nine grandchildren and four great- : grandchildren.


Services were held at 10 a.m. on May 9, 2000 in the Rose Chapel of the Lake". Isabella Funeral Home, Inter -: ment followed at the Kern River Valley Cemetery in Wofford Heights. Veterans Post 7665 performed the memorial part of the service. Pastor Bert Simpson of First Baptist Church of Lake Isabella offici- ated.
