Services were held at McCormick-McMillan in Gardena Calif., March 22, at 1 p.m. Interment at Pacific Crest Cemetery in Redondo Beach, Calif.


Cecil Ray Edmondson


Cecil Ray Edmondson, 74, of Lake Isabella passed away March 24, 1999 at Kern Valley Hospital.


He was born Feb. 14, 1925 worked for the County of Los Angeles. He retired in 1977 and moved to the Kern River Valley. Ray belonged to the Masons of Los Angeles and Kern River Valley Moose Lodge, Shrine Club of Lake Isabella, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Le- gion of the Kern River Valley.


Ray came to live with us at the Burlando Assisted Living in Kernville Feb. 2, 1999 where he tried very hard to overcome his illness. We didn't get -to have a lot of time with Ray, but he was our friend. He was a sweet and intelligent man and will be missed by us all.

Robert H. (Buster) Clayton


Funeral services were held Thursday 11 a.m. at the Full Gospel Church in Mountain Mesa for Robert H. Clayton. Officiating was Pastor Gary Nichols. Mr. Clayton was born Jan. 29, 1916 in Beggs, Okla., and passed away April 4, 1999 in Mountain Mesa.


He has been a resident of the Kern River Valley for 16 years. He farmed. in Kern County for 64 years. He en- joyed gardening, camping and hunting and he was a member of the Full Gospel Church.


He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Rosie Leona Clayton; four sisters, Bertie Sturman of Oklahoma., Irene Brown, Daisy Robertson and Ruby McWhirter all of Lake Isabella; and a brother William Clayton of Tulare; three children, Rob- ert Earl Clayton of Bakersfield, Leon Wayne Clayton of Wof- ford Heights, Carolyn Sue Bumps of Bakersfield; 13 grandchildren and 22 great- grandchildren.

James Martin Payne


James Payne was born on August 18, 1925, and passed away on April 6, 1999 in Bakersfield. James is survived by his wife of 56 years, Norma together, Clare Windham, James Wilson Payne (de- ceased), Brenda Boggs and Linda Franklin. He is also sur- vived by his grandchildren, Richard Windham, Kelly Windham, Kimberly Barela, Debbie Jones, and James Payne Jr. His surviving grand- children are Stephen Jones


and Destiney McIntosh. Mr. Payne is also survived by his sons-in-law Richard Windham, Bryon Boggs, and Brian Franklin.


Mr. Payne was born in Blytheville, Ark., to his parents Ada and Greene Payne. He Payne. They had four children moved to California in 1952. He worked and retired from Lockheed Aircraft. Mr. Payne enjoyed going on trips and also to the horse races. He was a really good dad and husband and we love him very much. to all the friends who have cared and been there for Dad through all his years of illness, the fam- ily thanks you.

in death by her husband James and seven brothers and one sister. She moved to the valley from Ventura in 1996 where she worked in the nursing field specializing in geriatrics.


She is survived by daughter Judy Baker of Ventura, daugh- ter Imogene Kleeman of Lake Isabella, son and daughter-in- law Leon and lona Morningstar of Lake Isabella, also seven grandchildren, 22 great-grand- children and 16 great-great- grandchildren.

Barbara Ann Girch


Barbara Ann Girch, born Aug. 25, 1933 to parents Niels and · Flora Jensen in Dannebrog, Neb., passed away April 13, 1999. She had been a resident of Weldon for 12 years. She was a member of the Kern Valley Hospital Auxiliary, the VFW Post 7665 Auxiliary, belonged to the 500 Bowling Club.


She is survived by her hus- band of 46 years, Don Girch, daughters, Cami Mccluskey of Huntington Beach and Shari Siebrecht of Kingman, Ariz., and three grandchildren.

Morningstar who passed away Dolores Hebrank who expired March 29, 1999 at Kern Valley April 14, 1999 at the Kern Val- Hospital. Nina was born in ley Nursing Center after an Dade County, Mo. to John and ' extended illness. She was born Zora Bishop and was preceded |June 2, 1922 in Braddock, Pa.


She was a member of the South Fork Women's Club. She was a resident of Weldon for-19 years.


She is survived by her hus- band of 57 years, Joseph Hebrank. She is also survived by five nieces in Orange County and one in Reno.


She will be missed by those who knew her.

Esther Mary Heyser


Esther Mary Heyser was born Nov. 6, 1907 in Okla- homa Territory to Robert and Rhoda (Loomis) Austin. Mrs. Heyser moved to Southern California where she grew up and married Sidney Heyser in 1927 in Los Angeles. During WWII she worked in area air- craft factories, first as a riveter and then advanced to an in- spector. She lived in the Los Angeles area until 1964 when she moved to the Kern River Valley and then to Nevada City in 1991.


Esther Mary Heyser is pre- deceased by her husband Sidney Heyser in 1989. Mr. Heyser is survived by her daughter Andea Heyser of Rough and Ready, Calif., son Robert "Fritz" Heyser, daugh- ter Joanne Harris, both of North San Juan, Calif., seven grand- children and ten great-grand- children, as well as numerous other relatives.

Margaret Blanche Lightner


Funeral services were held for Margaret Blanche Lightner on Fri. April 16, 1999 at 1 p.m. at the Kern River Valley Cem- etery in Wofford Heights. Mar- garet passed away in Moun- tain Mesa on April 13, 1999. She was born in Bakersfield on Aug. 7, 1917. Raised in the valley, Margaret grew up with a sense of pride in her local heritage. In her life, she be- came wonderfully well-orga- nized and individually blessed with many, many talents. Adept at arts and crafts, Margaret used her organizational skills to create some of the most wonderful and detailed quilts and afghans. In her life, she met the love of her life, Lynn Reynolds Lightner, and the two were married on March 28, 1947 in Yuma, Ariz. In her long and colorful life, Margaret did many things. For some time she served as the City Man- ager of the town of Needles, Calif., where she was also a member of the Eagles Club. But a while back, Margaret became ill. And on April 13, 1999 she went home to be with the Lord. She will be truly missed by all.


Margaret is survived by her husband Lynn Lightner of Wofford Heights, her daughter Joyce Colby of San Leandro, and her sister Deannie Pool of Clovis, and by the rest of her family and special friends.

Albert Edward Ladner


Private arrangements were made for Albert Edward Ladner a.m. for Mary "Olga" Conrad at who passed away April 15, 1999 in Mountain Mesa. Mr. Ladner was born in Los Ange- les and has lived in Mountain Mesa for the past 14 years.


He retired from the Santa 'Fe Railroad after 15 years. He enjoyed fishing and camping with his wife of 22 years. He is survived by his wife Vida and son and daughter-in-law, Den- nis and Linda Ladner of Los Angeles, and son and daugh- ter-in-law, Frank and Cathy Setinc of Kernville and three grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.


Interment will be at River- side National Cemetery.

Mary "Olga" Conrad


Funeral services were held Sat. April 17, 1999 at 10:30 the Family Life Center in Wof- ford Heights. Officiating was Pastor Brian Polston.


Olga was a resident of Kern County for more than 50 years and a resident of Kernville for ten years. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors while living in Delano and a member of the Four Square Church in Wofford Heights for the past ten years. She loved to play Yahtzee, and going to her Bible Study. She loved her church and her family. She was pre- ceded in death by her hus- band Frank Conrad in 1996. She is survived by her daugh- ter June Conrad of Wofford Heights; daughter and son-in- law Carol and Ronnie Crowder of Kernville; four grandchildren, Billy and Lynette Hunt of Santa Fe, N.M., Clint and Lisa Hunt of San Jose, Ronnie Crowder Jr. of Sulphur Okla., and Robbie and Jennifer Hunt of Bakersfield; 11 great-grand- children; brother and sister-in- law Ford and Marry Williams, brother and sister-in-law Bill and Mary Williams, all of Buttonwillow, Calif .; brother and sister-in-law Jimmy and Twila Williams of Bakersfield and sister Nina Beatrice Kibbe of Kernville.

Diana Kay King


Funeral Services were held Wed. April 21, 1999 at 11 a.m. at Valley Mortuary Chapel for Diana Kay King. Officiating was Pastor Dave Snow. Diana was born March 18, 1946 in Hermosa Beach, Calif. and passed away on April 17, 1999 in Bakersfield after a long ill- ness. She has lived in the Kern Valley for 22 years and worked at the Kern Valley Hospital for 12 years.


Her animals were her first love. She had the biggest heart for animals, especially cats. She raised Persians for years. She loved flowers and the out- doors. She was preceded in


death by her father, James Rolfe; her sister, nephew and grandson.


She is survived by her hus- band of 32 years, Don King; mother and step-father, Thelma and Frank Wilson; daughter and son-in-law, Tony and Drew Berry; sons and daughters-in-law Greg and Kristi King, Derin and Cassie King, Eric and Robin King; fa- ther-in-law and mother-in-law, Virgil and Chet King; grand- children, Derek, Daniel, Charlie, Sara, Luke, Emily, Nicole and Christy.


She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Merv Burbank


Merv Burbank passed away March 20, 1999 at his home in Wofford Heights. He was 79 years old. He had lived in the ·Valley for about 18 years. He. was a 35 year member of the Eagles in Bellflower, Calif. He was also a member of the Moose and V.F.W. He had


been a CPA for over 45 years.


He is survived by his wife Phyllis; two daughters and one son; six grandchildren and one great-grandson. He also had four stepchildren, seven grand- children and five great-grand- children.


He was laid to rest at Rose Hill Cemetery in Whittier, Calif.

Funeral services were held Friday May 7, 1999 at 10:00 a.m. at Valley Mortuary Chapel for Nancy Mae Knollenberg who passed away on May 1, 1999 at her home in Weldon after a long illness. Officiating was Pastor Robbie Robinson of the Weldon Southern Bap- tist Church. Graveside services were held at Forest Lawn Me- morial Park in Hollywood Hills, Calif. Nancy was born Febru- ary 20, 1915 in Collinsville, Oklahoma and has been a resi- dent of the Kern River Valley from 1982. She enjoyed crafts


and her family.


She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Lyle and Jan Knollenberg of Bentonville, Arkansas and son and daugh- ter-in-law Ross and Linda Knollenberg of Ridgecrest, son and daughter-in-law Gordon and Bea Knollenberg of San Diego, and daughter and son- in-law Linda and John Fulton of Goliad, TX. Also, 21 grand- children and one great-grand- daughter and one great-grand- son.

Claude (Grizz) Bess


Graveside services were held at Hillcrest Memorial Park in the "Garden of Memories" on Saturday May 15 at 1 p.m. for Claude Bess of Weldon. He went home to be with his Lord May 10, 1999 after a long battle with cancer.


Born in Eufaula, Okalahoma on September 16, 1928, Claudie and his parents moved to Bakersfield in 1940. He at- tended East Bakersfield High School and went on to enlist in the U.S. Army. He was sta- tioned in Germany with the Army of Occupation. He mar- ried Jackie Lee in 1949 and they raised three children.


Claudie was an active per- son, a manager and coach at the Greenfield Baseball Asso- ciation for several years. After retiring, he and Jackie moved to Weldon. As an outdoors · person he enjoyed traveling, camping, fishing, raising a gar- den and cutting wood. As an avid fisherman, he spent a lot


of time at Lake Isabella with with his friends and family. He was a member of the Kern River Valley C.B. Club. Through this club he made many friends and enjoyed all the activities and outings they had.


Claudie was preceded in death by his parents, Will & Emma Bess, his son Billy Bess, and grandson, CPL. Dustin Shawn Boesch, six brothers and two sisters. Claudie is sur- vived by his wife Jackie of 50 years, two daughters, Susie and Debbie; sons-in-law Danny and Gary; two sisters, . Mary Jagow and Jewel Godfrey; four grandchildren, Travis, Kristi, Sarah and D.J .; great-grandsons Tyler and Kyle, and many nieces and nephews.


Officiating the service was Pastor Richard Hill. Pallbear- ers include Kenny Baker, Gary Gifford, Sam Griffin, Travis Smith, Wayne Smith and Joe Springstead. He will be truly missed by all his family and many friends who enjoyed fish- ing with him.

James K. Stapp


Funeral services were held May 24, 1999 at Valley Mortuary Chapel for James K. Stapp of Lake Isabella. Officiating was Pastor Mark Beaunase of the Highland Chapel Methodist Church.


James was a resident of the Kern River Valley for 33 years and was the manager of Inyok- ern Airport for 15 years. He was the chief of the Volunteer Fire" Dept. of Inyokern for about five years. He was the past president of the Lake Isabella-Bodfish Property Owners Association. He was also the owner of Stapp Au- tomotive Service in Wofford Heights from 1961 to 1967.


James enjoyed hunting, fish- ing, camping, and went to Death Valley every year with the Death Valley 49ers. He is preceded in death by his first wife Dorothy and his son Jimmie K. Stapp. He is survived by his wife of four years, Betty, and his son Douglas E. Stapp of Sacramento; daugh- ter and son-in-law Virginia and Paul Gregg of Hawaii; brother and sister-in-law Wilber and Lois Stapp of Cherry Valley, Calif,; and grandchildren and their spouses Paula and Carl Chappell of Ridgecrest; Tim and Cindy Stapp; Tina and Steve Norvy of Sacramento; and Christopher and Faith Gregg of Hawaii.

Leroy C. (Tex) Behrens


Funeral services were held May 25, 1999 at Valley Mortuary Chapel for Leroy C. "Tex" Behrens. Officiating was Pastor Carlos Fandino of the Church of the Nazarene.


Mr. Behrens was born Dec. 15, 1916 in Mason, Tex., and passed away May 20, 1999 at his home in Squirrel Valley after a long ill- ness. He was a resident of the Kern River Valley for 19 years. He was in WWII and worked at Feolds Band Instruments for 40 years. He enjoyed fishing and gar- dening and taking care of the Nazarene Church. He is preceded in death by his wife Moline in March 1998.


Mr. Behrens is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Toni and Larry Holochwost of Lake Isa- bella; son and daughter-in-law Patrick and Diana Behrens of Glendale, Ariz .; a brother, Roscoe Behrens; a sister, Nell Skurlock of San Angelo, Tex .; and grand- children Matthew and Bonnie Ho- lochwost of Bakersfield and Jen- nifer Remtema and Samuel Behrens of Glendale, Ariz.

Gene Elbert Garber


Memorial services were held May 20, 1999 at the Family Life Center in Wofford Heights for Gene Elbert Garber of Wofford Heights. Officiating was Pastor Brian Polston. Mr. Garber was born Aug. 7, 1930 in Colorado Springs, Colo. and passed away May 13, 1999 in Bakersfield.


Gene spent 16 years in the army as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne and 10 more years in the Reserve. He was a resident of the Kern River Valley for 18 years. He enjoyed painting and drawing, es- pecially wildlife. He was a mem- ber of the Family Life Center.


Gene was preceded in death by his daughter, Nancy Ann, in 1958, and is survived by his wife of 47 years Barbara Garber of Wofford Heights; son Gene Garber of Southlake; son and daughter-in- law Jeff and Christine Garber of Bakersfield; daughter and son-in- law Karen Ann and Robert Mix of Rogers, Ark .; brother and sis- ter-in-law Howard and Geri Garber of Redding; sister Carol Fizer of Chico; and five grand- children.

Lola Mae Smith


Funeral services were held Friday May 28, 1999 at 2:30 p.m. at the Kernville Baptist Church for Lola Mae Smith. Officiating was Pastor Dick Lewis and Pastor John Revis. Interment was at the Kern River Valley Cemetery.


Lola went home to be with her Lord and Savior May 24, 1999 at home in Kernville with her family at her bedside. Lola is preceded in death by her loving husband of 59 years, Wayne.


Lola was born 79 years ago in Quitman, Mississippi and moved to Long Beach, Calif., with her family in 1954. After vacationing in the valley for many years, Wayne and Lola moved to Kernville in 1978. They have spent many happy years here. They were both


members of the Kernville First Baptist Church.


Lola is survived by her son Donald Smith of Long Beach; daughter Dinah Smith of Cerritos; brother and sister-in- law Lamar and Fran Culpepper of Florida; grandson and wife Craig and Patty Allison of Buena Park; great-grandchil- dren, Erica and Spencer; sis- ter-in-law and husband, Eloise Purvis and Bill of Mississippi.


Lola's children would like to convey their heartfelt thanks to all her friends and neigh- bors for their loving support and help over the past year. You are the best!

Edith L. Blue

Edith L. Blue passed away June 3, 1999 in Las Vegas, Nev. Edith was a long-time resi- dent of Bodfish. She enjoyed fishing, working in her garden and dancing.


Edith was born Aug. 12, 1919, in Harrison, Ark. Edith was one of 16 brothers and sisters. Edith was preceded in death by her loving husband, Hayden Blue.


Edith is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Diane Blue, of Las Vegas and their children, Joe Jr., Todd, Crystal, Cammile, Tony, Monique, Veronica and Eliza- beth; and son and daughter- in-law, Jeffrey and Diana Blue of Bodfish, and their children Melinda and Meghan.


A memorial service will be held in Las Vegas.

A memorial service was held Saturday, May 29, 1999, at 4 p.m. at the Lake Isabella King- dom Hall of Jehovah's Wit- nesses for Arlene Castelnuovo of Weldon. Officiating was Larry Howie.

Arlene was born Oct. 5, 1927 in Dolores, Colo. and died May 26, 1999 at Kern Valley Hospi- tal in Mountain Mesa. She was 71 years old.


She was a 20-year resident of the Kern River Valley.


She is survived by her hus- band of 32 years, Eugene of Weldon; mother Lola Lisenbury of Wash .; sons Daniel Holt of San Bernardino, Dennis Holt of Pinion Hills and Eugene Castelnuovo, Jr. of Bloomington; daughters Diana

Peter Bruches, Jr.


Private arrangements were made for Peter Bruches, Jr., who passed away on May 31, 1999 in Bakersfield. Mr. Bruches was born Dec. 28, 1914 in Broome County, N.Y. He worked for General Elec- tric for 35 years before retiring and moving to the Kern Valley 24 years ago. He was a mem- ber of the Elks and a former Exalted Leader. He also en- joyed hunting.


He is survived by his son Peter Bruches of N.H .; grand- sons Peter Bruches of River- side and John Bruches; grandaughter Tina Newton; and great-grandchildren Robbie, Randy and Ryan.

Albert Ross (AI) Dodson


Graveside services were held June 4, 1999 at Kern River Valley Cemetery for Albert R. Dodson. Officiating was Pas- tor C. Preston North.


Mr. Dodson was born July 19, 1917 in Hickman, Ky. and passed away May 31, 1999 in Bakersfield. Al was a veteran of the U.S. Navy Construction 63rd Battalion ("CBs") serving


during WWII from 1942 to 1945. Returning to Oklahoma City to join his wife and daugh- ter and working as foreman at Bell Lumber Co. and going on to become a building contrac- tor, he was a major developer of Del City, Okla. during the early '50s.


Moving to Calif. in 1953 where he continued as a build- ing contractor, during the late '70s he became a mall im- provement contractor for ma- jor shoe and clothing stores in the Bay Area.


Retiring in Lake Isabella 1979 where he loved to fish and go boating, he built the first hand-peeled log house in the Kern River Valley.


He was a member of the Kern Valley Country Club and the Men's Golf Club for 15 years and a member of the local Moose Lodge. Al enjoyed fishing, boating, rock hound- ing and golfing.


Albert is survived by his wife of 59 years, Trilbia A. Dodson; daughter Judith Wirsing and son-in-law Richard Wirsing of Nipomo; granddaughter Shawn Vasquez and her hus- band Ed Vasquez of Nipomo; grandsons Daniel Wirsing and Richard Wirsing; and four great-grandchildren: Eric, Jimmy, Peter and Katherine Vasquez, also of Nipomo.

Charles "Chuck" Frederick Wild


Charles "Chuck" Frederick Wild left family and friends sud- denly on June 9, 1999. He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, Aug. 26, 1930.


He is survived by his wife Lila M. Wild of 48 years, three sons, Michael and wife Linda Wild; Steve Wild; Larry Wald; and daughter Cindy DiAngelo and husband Andy; three grandsons, Ben Wild, Daniel Wild and Eric Wild; two grand- daughters, Ashley Marie and Briana Danville DiAngelo.


He joined the Air National Guard 190th Fighter Bomber Squadron unit which was acti- vated soon thereafter. After military service he worked for Ryan Aeronautical/Teledyne retiring after 36 years. He spent two additional years with Sci- entific Atlanta before retiring in 1988 to Kernville. During his life he was a scoutmaster for seven years, an adviser for a coed high adventure post back- packing and canoeing with teens all over the Southwest. He also worked with the scout- ing high adventure team for years, taught canoeing with the American Red Cross and American Canoeing Associa- tion. He was the recipient of the Scouting Order of Merit, and the District Silver Beaver Award for service to youth. He was a member of the Kern Valley Search and Rescue Team since. 1993 where he enjoyed working with Rosey, the Search and Rescue dog.


He had a profound love for God's country, family and friends.

Chadwick S. Speer


- Graveside services were held Saturday June 12, 1999 at 2 p.m. at Kern River Valley Cemetery in Wofford Heights, for Chadwick S. Speer who passed away Wednesday June 9, 1999 in Bakersfield.


Officiating was Pastor Dave Snow of the First Baptist Church in Lake Isabella.


Mr. Speer was born Novem- ber 5, 1922 in Tower Hill, III. He spent most of his life working in Auto body repair, till retiring and moving to the Kern River Valley in 1985. He enjoyed golf and traveling with his wife and the Escapees R.V. Group. He attended the First Baptist Church in Lake Isabella.


He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Betty Speer of Lake Isabella; son and daughter-in- law Randal and Sue Speer of San Diego; daughter and son- in-law Rosemary and David Kirby of Hesperia; daughter and son-in-law Sandra and - Dan Stephens of Poway, Ca- lif .; grandchildren, Dawn Coffman, Tricia Densen, Tami Stephens, Curtis Randolph, Connie Kelly, Patsy Kerby, Sheridan Speer, Jereny Speer, Nicki Speer and Nina Speer. Great-grandchildren, Marcus Coffman, Cassie Baker, An- drew Stephens, Mandy Densen, Ethen Randolph and three brothers, Wallace, John and Robert Spper and two sis- ters, Betty Jo LaCost and Roberta Verden.

Margaret B. "Peggy" Peters


"Peggy," as she liked to be called, was born July 13, 1916, and passed away on June 6, 1999, in Mountain Mesa. She suffered a stroke on Nov. 3, 1997. She had been a resident of the Kern Valley Nursing Home for the past two-and-a- half years. She was 82 years old. She was a fighter up to the end of her life.


She and Fred retired to Wofford Heights almost 10 years ago, moving from Las Vegas. They moved to the Kern Valley to be near their family.


Peggy is survived by her husband of 30 years, Fred Peters, of Wofford Heights; her daughter, Margaret Harmening, of Kernville; her son and daughter-in-law, John and Judy McGill, of Long Beach; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Harriet, of Florida; and many friends. She will be missed by everyone who knew her.


Memorial services will be held June 19 at 3 p.m. at the Rose Garden at Kern Valley Cemetery.
