GENEALOGIES

Having a hereditary taste for military matters, he entered the service of the United States as an ensign in 1814, and repaired to the cantonment at Pittsfield, whence he was detailed to conduct a body of British prisoners to Canada on exchange, and then returned to Pittsfield. Soon afterwards the troops at that place were ordered to the Niagara frontier, and arrived at Buffalo the latter part of July, the day before the battle of Lundy's Lane. They were then ordered to Fort Erie, which was early in August besieged by the British, under Gen. Drummond, and kept in a close state of siege for two months. During this period there were two desperate battles, in which Lieut. Chandler participated: an assault by Drummond upon the fort on the 15th of August, and a sortie from the fort on the 17th of September, which induced Drummond to raise the siege. The American loss was returned as 595, and that of the enemy at 1700, including nearly 400 taken prisoners. After some slight skir- mishes on the Niagara frontier, the army was ordered to proceed by forced marches to Sackett's Harbor. On the return of peace, Lieut. Chandler was discharged. Though he held a commission as lieutenant during the greater part of the campaign he had the com- mand of a company, and during his term of service was promoted from a third to a first lieutenant. He was subsequently major-gen- eral in the militia, and held the office of sheriff of the county ten years. He represented the county in the State Senate, and held the office of justice of the peace, and trial justice. He was for many years an active member of the Middlesex Agricultural Society.

He received a flesh wound and after the dis- persal of the company, made his way on foot to Rolla nearly thirty miles away. On 2 Mar. 1862 he was commissioned first lieutenant and adju- tant of the 7th Cavalry, Missouri Vols. In the fall of 1862 the regiment joined the Army of the Frontier. As its assistant adjutant-general he was in the battle of Prairie Grove 7 Dec. 1862 and for meritorious con- duct was promoted to lieutenant-colonel. From this time to the end of the war he was in command of his regiment, his colonel being on de- tached duty.
