He married MARY MILES EYRE, who was born at Chard, England, 21 Mar. 1827, daughter of Miles and Eliza (Turner). When a child of ten she marched in the procession on the day of Queen Victoria's coronation. About 1840 Mr. Eyre came to America and started the manufacture of cutlery at St. Louis, Mo. In Mar. 1843 his wife and four children sailed for this country, and after a passage of forty days landed at New Orleans. The family joined a party of about two hundred and fifty men, women, and children that started from St. Joseph or the Far West. At Fort Laramie an old Indian chief was much surprised and chagrined to find his offer of a hundred horses for Mary refused. At Fort Bridges the party separated, Mr. Eyre and the rest of the family going to Oregon, Mary joining a friend, Miss Yount, and going to her home in California. The whole journey took six months and was made on horseback. They en- dured many hardships and privations, at one time being without food for two days. At Napa Valley she married in 1844 John Sin- clair, a Scotchman, who owned a ranch in the Sacramento Valley. After many exciting experiences they found conditions too danger- ous to remain, and Mr. Sinclair left with his family for New York. At New Orleans he and their infant son died of yellow fever. Mrs. Sinclair made her way to New York, and later made her home with Capt. Phelps at Lexington. 25 Nov. 1852, she married Sidney G.
