28. JOSIAH4 MUNROE (Marrett,3 John,2 William1), born 12 Feb. 1745. He was in the French War of 1762 and served in the Revolu- tion with the rank of Captain. According to the inscription on his monument, he "became the friend of Lafayette, who recognized his services in the gift of a sword." He was an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati, and was one of the 48 pioneers who, under Gen. Rufus Putnam, settled the Northwest Territory, the first settlement being at Marietta, Ohio, where he was the first justice of the peace and the second postmaster.

30. EDMUND4 MUNROE (William,3 William,2 William1), born 2 Feb. 1736, died 28 June 1778.
He was ensign in Rogers' Rangers, lieutenant in the French and Indian War, was present at the Battle of Lexington, was captain in the Revolutionary War, and so distinguished himself at the capture of Burgoyne that he was presented with a pair of candlesticks from that General's baggage. He was killed at the Battle of Monmouth.

31. WILLIAM4 MUNROE (William,3 William,2 William1), born 28 Oct. 1742, died 1827.
He was orderly sergeant of Capt. Parker's company, commanded the guard for Hancock and Adams at the Clarke House on the night of 18 Apr. 1775, and took them in the early morning to a place of safety, returning in time to form the line of minute-men on Lexing- ton Green. He was lieutenant in the Northern Army at the capture of Burgoyne, and later, as Colonel of militia, marched towards Springfield to assist in quelling the Shays' Rebellion. He was select- man for nine years and representative to the General Court for two years. He was proprietor of the Munroe Tavern from 1771 to his death, and there entertained Washington in 1789.
He married first ANNA SMITH, born 17 June 1742, died 2 Jan. 1781, g. s., daughter of Jonas5 and Thankful (Fiske); secondly MRS. MARY or POLLY ROGERS, whose first husband was killed at the Battle of Monmouth.

He married LYDIA EATON of Reading, and settled at Lynnfield, where he was selectman for several years, and where his house still stands. He fought on 19 April 1775, and claimed to have received a ball in his thigh and thirty-two bullet holes through his clothing. Children:
