REED
1. WILLIAM1 REED and wife MABEL (KENDALL), with three child- ren, came to New England from London in the ship Defence 6 Oct. 1635. He was at that time forty-eight years old and his wife thirty. They lived at Dorchester, where he sold real estate 1639, and at Scituate where he was constable in 1644. He became a resident of Muddy River, now Brookline, in 1648, and next purchased of Nich- olas Davis, or Davies, a farm at Woburn to which he moved. He died at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England, in 1656. Oliver Cromwell in England appointed the wife Mabel executrix of her husband's will 31 Oct. 1656. His widow returned to their children, then at Woburn, and married 21 Nov. 1660 Henry Summers of Woburn, who died previously to her death. She died at the home of her son George 15 June 1690.

During the Revolution he served as one of a detachment from Lexington alarm company commanded by Capt. Edmund Munroe for five days at Cambridge, by order of Committee of Safety. He was present as one of Capt. Parker's company on the morning of 19 April 1775; was a selectman for five years during the period from 1770 to 1789, and one of the Committee of Safety 1778.
He married BETTY SIMONDS, born 22 Jan. 1732, died 20 Dec. 1811, daughter of Joshua3 and Hannah (Poulter).
