CHARLES CLINTON9 GOODWIN (George C.,8 Anson,7 Eldad, 6 Uriah," Isaac, 4 Nathaniel,3 William,2 Ozias1) was born at Lowell 1 Feb. 1839, died 27 Nov. 1905, third son of George Clinton, born at Ashfield 13 Oct. 1807, and grandson of Anson and Temperance (Rogers). His mother, Jane Pearson, was born at Haverhill 10 Dec. 1811. The ancestor, William Goodwin, came from England in 1632, probably from Braintree in Essex, and settled at Newtown for three years. In 1635 he moved to Hartford, Conn., where he became one of its largest land-holders and "most sagacious of its early inhabitants."
He obtained his education in the public schools of Charlestown and Lexington, graduating with the first class of the High School. He was a wholesale druggist, an officer in various druggists' asso- ciations, a Knight Templar, a member of a church choir for 47 years, and a member of the Arion Male Quartette. He moved from Charlestown to Lexington in 1848; from 1858 to 1863 resided at Charlestown, returning to Lexington in 1863 for a permanent home. He was a member of the first board of trustees of the Lexington Savings Bank.
He married 15 Oct. 1862 ALICE DODGE PHELPS, born 18 Oct. 1838, daughter of William Dane7 and Lusanna Tucker (Bryant). Children, all born at Lexington:

GOOKIN
SAMUEL HENRY3 GOOKIN* (Samuel,2 John C.1) was born at Ports- mouth, N. H., 21 May 1820, third son of Col. Samuel, born at Portland, Me., Dec. 1791, and grandson of John Cotton and Mary (Webber). His mother, Mary Patterson, was born at Beverly 1791, daughter of Capt. Thomas and Margaret (James). The an- cestor, Daniel Gookin, came from England to Virginia in the ship Flying Harte, an original patentee of Virginia. His son Daniel came to Cambridge in 1644.
He received his education in private and public schools of Ports- mouth, N. H., graduating from Mr. Harris's Academy. He was a dry goods' commission merchant. He was one of the founders of the Temple Club, Mercantile Library Association, Boston Board of Trade, Hist. Gen. Soc., Mass. Inst. Technology, Academy of Natu- ral History, Boston Theatre, Y. M. C. U., and one of the commit- tee to receive the Prince of Wales upon his visit to Boston, 1860.
He married at Portsmouth, N. H., 25 Jan. 1844, MARTHA A. BALL, born at Portsmouth, N. H., Oct. 1819, died 21 Aug. 1858, daugh- ter of Samuel and Mary (Moody); secondly at Newburg, N. Y., 12 Jan. 1860, FRANCES ELIZABETH SISTARE, born at Savannah, Ga., 30 Jan. 1835, died 19 Feb. 1911, daughter of Horace and Lucy (Scarborough).
