JOSEPH DENNIE ("The Lay-Preacher." - "Oliver Oldschool"), of fame in American Literature, was born in Boston 30 Aug. 1768 and died in Philadelphia 7 Jan. 1812.
When seven years old he moved to Lexington with his parents and here made his home and attended the local schools.
He was graduated from Harvard 1790.
He was the only child of Joseph and Mary (Green).
His parents resided in Lexington probably on "Concord Hill" from 1775 to his father's death here 11 Sept. 1811, after which his mother moved to Brookline where she died 6 Sept. 1819.
