MERRIAM*
The Lexington Merriams are descended from Joseph Merriam, who with his brothers George and Robert were early settlers of Concord. He was probably a son of William Merriam of Hadlowe, County Kent, England, who in his will dated 8 Sept. 1635 names his sons Joseph, George, and Robert Merriam, besides other child- ren and grandchildren.t
1. JOSEPH1 MERRIAM, a clothier, born in England about 1600, helped charter a vessel and came to America in 1638, settling at Concord, where he died 1 Jan. 1640-41. He was admitted to the church, and on 14 Mar. 1638-39 was made freeman.
His will dated 29 Dec. 1640 bequeaths "To Sarah my wife all my whole estate towards and for the bringing up of all my children; & I do give to the said Sarah my wife power and authority to sell my house that I now dwell in . .. it being larger and bigger than she shall stand in need of: and that the overplus of providing a lesse house shal be disposed in some way for the good & benefit of my wife & children: And my mind & will is that my wife shall have the bringing up of all my children untill they come to the age of one and twenty yeares the sonns & the daughters either at that time or the day of marriage: . .. wife whole executor & with her my trusty & wellbeloved brethren Mr. Thomas Flint, Simon Willard, Robert Miriam, whom I humbly intreate & put in trust."

He probably came to Cambridge Farms about the time of his marriage. He was a subscriber for the building of the meeting-house in 1692, was assessed in the tax list for the payment of the minister's salary from 1692 to 1693, was one of the original members of the church in 1696, and was chosen deacon at that time. In 1714 he was one of the committee chosen to seat the new meeting-house. He became one of the most prominent men in the parish and in the town, and frequently represented the church in ecclesiastical coun- cils. He was chosen an assessor in 1700, '07, and '12, under the parish organization; and when the precinct was erected into a town, he was elected one of the selectmen, and was reelected to that office in 1713, '19, '21, and '23, and was an assessor in 1715. He resided in the southwesterly part of the town.
