At the age of sixteen he began a sea-faring life; passing through all grades, at the age of twenty-two he took command of a vessel fitted out by William Gray. He followed the sea for forty years with unusual success. In 1831 John Randolph, then minister to Russia, made him his confidential agent and friend. About 1840 he became a resident of Lexington.

1. JOSEPH3 UNDERWOOD (Joseph,2 Joseph1) was born 28 May 1681, son of Joseph and Elizabeth ( ).


He was at Lexington as early as 1719 when he was chosen to subordinate town office. He owned the covenant in 1723 and his name was on the first tax bill extant 1729 (1868). He was taxed at Lexington as late as 1745. He was taxed as a non-resident in 1748-49 and probably left town between those periods.


He married RUTH ( )? who died a widow at Lincoln 23 June 1775.
