His mother was Huldah Copeland, born at Bridgewater 19 May 1777, daughter of Joseph and Rebecca (Hooper), a descendant of John Alden. The ancestor, John Holmes, settled at Plymouth in 1632.

He attended the district schools of Bridgewater, Bridgewater Academy, Phillips Academy, Exeter, N. H., graduated from Har- vard, A.B. 1843, A.M. 1846. He spent a year in Europe, attending a course of lectures at L'École de Médecine at Paris, and also in study in the hospitals of Paris and London. He received his M.D. from Harvard, 1848, began practice at West Cambridge, 1849, moved to Lexington in 1851 and continued in practice until his death. He published several professional works of a purely techni- cal character. He was a member of the Mass. Medical Society and the N. E. Hist. Gen. Soc. He was instrumental in founding a public library at Halifax which bears his name. He was justice of the peace for twenty-five years; town physician at West Cambridge and Arlington for several years, and member of the school committee both at Arlington and Lexington. He was an enthusiastic horti- culturist.

1. DANIEL1 HUDSON, who came to this country in 1639, was of Watertown, 1640, and Lancaster, 1665, where he purchased a town right for £40.
He married JOHANNA ( ), and both were killed by Indians in 1697.

3. JOHN3 HUDSON (Nathaniel,2 Daniel1), born 1713, died at Ber- lin 6 Aug. 1799.
He resided at Marlboro and later at Berlin; he was in the French and Revolutionary wars.
He married first ELIZABETH MCALLISTER of Northboro, died 16 May 1786, aged 86; secondly 28 Mar. 1787 BETHIA WOOD, who survived him.

i. ELISHA, 4 m. 4 Oct. 1770 SUSANNA BRIGHAM of Marlboro. He was in the French War in 1756, '58, and '60, also in the Revolutionary Army; after the war, he moved to Canada where he died.
ii. ELIJAH, m. HANNAH GOODNOW. He was in the French War in 1758, '59, also in the Revolution.
iii. MIRIAM, b. 1746; m. JONAS BABCOCK of Northboro; d. there.
iv. MOSES, b. 4 Jan. 1749; served 5 years in the Revolutionary Army; d. unm.

5. CHARLES5 HUDSON (Stephen,4 John,3 Nathaniel,2 Daniel1), born 14 Nov. 1795, died 4 May 1881.
He studied theology and was settled at Westminster, where he resided twenty-five years. He represented that town for four years in the House of Representatives, Worcester Co. for six years in the State Senate, served three years on the Executive Council, and represented the Worcester North District eight years in Congress. He was naval officer in the Boston Custom House, four years a member of the State Board of Education, and for four years an assessor of Internal Revenue for the Sixth Collection District of Massachusetts. He published several books, and among them, the History of Marlboro and in 1868 the History of Lexington. In 1849 he moved from Westminster to Lexington. He was select- man from 1868 to 1875.
He married first 21 July 1825 ANN RIDER, born 4 July 1806, died 19 Sept. 1829, daughter of John and Mercy (Brigham) of Shrews- bury; secondly 14 May 1830 MARTHA BRIGHAM RIDER, born 15 June 1808, died 11 Jan. 1888, sister of his first wife.

He graduated from the Lawrence Scientific School, Harvard University, 1854. He went West to practice his profession. Subse- quently became assistant superintendent Chicago, Burlington & Quincy R. R .; general superintendent Baltimore & Ohio; general manager Minneapolis & St. Louis R. R .; general manager East Tennessee, Virginia & Georgia R. R .; and chief engineer South- ern R. R., retiring from active railway service in 1899. He re- sides at Knoxville, Tenn.
He married 1 Jan. 1862 FRANCES HELEN NICHOLS of Boston. Children:

7. JOHN WILLIAMS6 HUDSON (Charles,5 Stephen,4 John,3 Na- thaniel,2 Daniel1), born 10 July 1836, died 1 June 1872.
He was graduated from Harvard, 1856, taught the high school of Wayland two years, read law, was admitted to the Suffolk Bar and practiced until his death. He enlisted in 1862, 35th Regiment Mass. Volunteer Infantry, receiving his commission as 2d lieu- tenant 2 Aug. 1862, was promoted to 1st lieutenant, captain, major, and lieutenant-colonel, 14 Nov. 1864, his term of service expiring 9 June 1865. He was in the battles of Antietam, Fred- ericksburg, Knoxville, North Anna River, Cold Harbor and the various battles about Petersburg. He served on the staffs of Gen- erals Ferrero, Ledlie and White. He was selectman 1866-68.
He married at Framingham, 25 Mar. 1865, SOPHIA WHITNEY MELLEN, born at Wayland, daughter of Hon. Edward and Sophia (Whitney).
