In 1740-41 he was elected to town office, was selectman in 1752, assessor in 1758, '62, '63, and filled the office of highway-surveyer, tythingman, constable, etc. On 9 Jan. 1743.he and his wife were admitted to the church by letter of dismission from the church at East Sudbury.

H., Sept. 1780, and grandson of Thomas and Abigail (Tuck). His mother was Margaret Libby, born at Conway, N. H., 1790, daughter of Joseph and Mary (Cole).
He was a manufacturer of piano and organ keys, and a member of the Handel and Haydn Society. He enlisted 15 Oct. 1862 in Co. B, 1st Battalion Heavy Artillery, discharged 29 June 1865, by rea- son of expiration of service. He became a resident of Lexington in 1873.

DIO5 LEWIS (John, 4 Joshua, 3 Joshua, 2 Joshua1) was born at Au- burn, N. Y., 3 Mar. 1823, died at Yonkers, N. Y., 21 May 1886, son of John and Delecta (Barbour) and grandson of Joshua and ( ) (Grinnell). He was descended from Joshua Lewis, a Baptist clergy- man from Wales, who settled in Connecticut in 1780.
He studied medicine at Auburn, N. Y., attended a course of lec- tures in the medical department of Harvard, and afterwards took his diploma from the Medical College at Cleveland, Ohio. He first settled at Buffalo, N. Y., where he followed his profession for sev- eral years, and there edited a medical magazine. After traveling a few years at home and abroad he gave himself to the development

of a new system of physical culture. For this purpose he came to Boston in the year 1860, and established a Normal Institute for physical education. To his labors as president of that institution he added the establishment and conduct of a Young Ladies' Semi- nary, which he opened at Lexington in 1864. He was the author of a number of books on the subject of gymnastics and hygiene, the titles of thirteen being given in Allibone's Dictionary.
