Dr. Whitcomb, formerly occupied by Dr. David Fiske on the corner of Elm Ave. and Bedford St. He carried on a shoe manufactory at Lexington and owned a large tract of land on both sides of Bedford St. He removed to Boston about 1827. He was well known in con- nection with his benevolent exertions in behalf of poor criminals; the later years of his life being almost entirely spent in ameliorating their condition by becoming bondsman for their good behavior, and providing means and opportunities that would tend to reforma- tion. - N. The first ancestor to come to this country was Robert Austin who came from England and settled at Kingstown, R. I. His mother was Ellen Luvan Upham, born at Sturbridge 26 Apr. 1839, died at Lexington 15 May 1904, daughter of John Johnson and Betsey (Sabin). He came to Lexington in 1899. He is a Free Mason and has been postmaster at East Lexington. In 1900 he bought out Mr. Childs and Mr. Holbrook at East Lexington.


He married at Cambridge, 21 Feb. 1894, MARY WILLIS BENNETT, born at Cambridge1 8 Jan. 1876, daughter of Frank Howe and Emma (Tufts).

LEONARD GARDNER3 BABCOCK (Aaron,2 Amos1) was born at New- ton 28 May 1841, died at Westboro 14 Mar. 1900, son of Dr. Aaron Gardner, born 30 May 1803, died 6 Aug. 1888, and grandson of Amos and Betty ( ) and a descendant of Malachi Babcock of Sherburn. His mother, Anna Blashfield of Princeton, died 27 Sept. 1849, aged 34 y. 2 m.


His boyhood days were spent at Lexington and he always con- sidered himself a Massachusetts man. At the beginning of the Civil War he was in Illinois and was mustered into the service of the United States as a corporal in Co. E, 11th Regt. Ill. Vol. Inf'y, on 1 Sept. 1861 for the period of three years; was discharged, for disa- bility, at Lake Providence, La., 7 Mar. 1863, by reason of gunshot wounds received at the battle of Fort Donelson, 15 Feb. 1862. He returned to the army as soon as able, and, though not fit for field duty, was on Gen. George C. McKee's staff as assistant adjutant- general, ranking as captain, commissioned 3 Nov. 1864, serving until May 1865. He came to Lexington to reside in 1866, was postmaster from Apr. 1867 to 1900; also town clerk, treasurer and collector.


He married at Vicksburg, Miss., 25 Dec. 1864, FRANCES CATH- LENA CHALMERS, born at Fredonia, N. Y., 13 Aug. 1840, daughter of Jacob Dellamont and Emeline Sybil (Gridley).

Jan. 1846, elder son of Francis George, born at Boston 9 Sept. 1818, and grandson of John and Hannah (Greene). His mother, Abby Gage Gibbs of Mayflower ancestry, was born at Sandwich 1 Nov. 1822, daughter of Col. Nathan Bowen and Salome (Dillingham). William Ballard, the first ancestor to come to this country, came from Southwell, England, in 1635, on the ship James and settled at Salem.


He married at Littleton, 3 Aug. 1870, ELLEN SHERWIN CONANT, born at Littleton 19 July 1846, daughter of Levi and Annie Whit- ney (Mead). She is descended from Roger Conant who came to Plymouth 1623, later first governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony at Salem, 1626, and Gabriel Mead, who was made freeman at Dor- chester in 1638. They moved to Lexington 29 Apr. 1871.
