* An old volume of sermons by John Prideaux, D.D. (Oxford, England, 1636), and others of earlier date, bears marks of high scholarship, and was preserved in Lexington by Stephen Locke, who bought the volume of Amos Tidd of Lexington in 176 -; the last figure of the year is not plain. Throughout the pages of the work have been inscribed various handwritings. A prophecy, A.D. 1737, foretells a comet with accompanying disasters. Dry summers in 1761 and 1762, extraordinary of their kind; a terrible storm of wind and snow at night, 2 Feb. 1763; moral say- ings; and ten stanzas by a local poet are upon the subject of husbandry. They begin with good advice to the diligent in business, and end in reproach for the careless and lazy. The volume was owned by a Lexington person in 1876.
