He was chosen deacon 14 Oct. 1768, was a mem- ber of the Committee of Correspondence, 1773, 1778; justice of the peace, 1775; representative to the General Court, 1783-86. On 10 Dec. 1787, Benjamin Brown was chosen delegate to the State Con- vention to ratify the Constitution of the United States. At a town meeting held 4 Apr. 1791, he was elected on a committee to present a memorial to Congress, asking them to erect a monument over the remains of the persons who were slain at Lexington on the 19th of April 1775. Munroe that he had seen nine British officers dressed in blue greatcoats, passing leisurely up the road, sometimes before and sometimes behind him, armed, as he discovered by the occasional blowing aside of their greatcoats. 6. FRANCIS4 BROWN (James,3 Joseph,2 John1), born 22 Jan. 1738, died 21 Apr. 1800, g. s. He and his wife were admitted to the church 24 Nov. 1765. He was one of Capt. Parker's company on the morn- ing of 19 April 1775. When the enemy were returning from Concord, they were met again by Capt. Parker's company in Lincoln, where Francis Brown received a very severe wound. A ball entered his cheek, passed under his ear, and lodged in the back part of his neck. It was extracted the following year, and notwithstanding this severe experience, he was the commander of the Lexington company

in 1776. He was a member of the Committee of Correspondence for the town, and afterwards served as selectman and town treasurer. He lived near the locality called Pierce's Bridge, and later built a house, and kept a tavern in the East Village, on a farm which is still owned by his descendants.
