He was educated at the public schools of Indianapolis, Ind., and in the Harvard Law School; owing to ill health he was obliged to leave the latter before graduation. He became a resident of Lexington in Oct. 1906.

born at Warwick, R. I., 18 July 1784, and grandson of Caleb and Susannah (Greene). His mother, Mary Hopkins Tibbetts, was born at East Greenwich, R. I., 29 Sept. 1805, daughter of Dr. John Waterman and Susan Green (Cooke). He was descended from Stuke- ley Westcott, who came from Devon Co., England, and settled at Salem.


He prepared at Greenwich Academy, Greenwich, R. I., for Brown University and graduated 1853. For about a year he was engaged in civil engineering, surveying for steam railroads in western Penn- sylvania. Then taught school for two years at Cincinnati, Ohio, before entering Harvard Divinity School, where he graduated 1859. He was settled over the Unitarian churches of Barre, 1860-65, West Dedham, 1865-67, Lexington, 1867-81, and Melrose, 1881-83. While at Melrose he also was the minister at Malden. He was a conscientious pastor, and interested in all movements for the general welfare of the town.


He married at Cambridge, 10 June 1863, SARAH ATKINS READ, born at Cambridge 24 Feb. 1838, died at Cambridge 30 June 1905, daughter of William and Sarah Goodwin (Atkins).

He became a resident of Lexington about 1872. He served as selectman 1897-98 and 1908-12.

BRADLEY CHILD8 WHITCHER (Miranda,7 Levi,6 Sargent,5 Richard,4 Reuben,3 Nathaniel,2 Thomas1) was born at Bath, N. H., 5 Sept. 1834, died 29 May 1909, son of Miranda and Rosanna (Child). The ancestor, Thomas Witcher or Whittier, settled at Salisbury.


He came to Lexington in 1868 and bought the grocery store of L. A. Saville which he sold back to Mr. Saville six years later. In June 1877 he established the grain and feed business with which he was connected for twenty-five years. He was a charter member and trustee of the Lexington Savings Bank; its president from 1892- 1904, when he resigned to become treasurer. He was a man of sterling character, a Freemason, and selectman 1872-75, '80-83.


He married 9 Apr. 1861 SARAII JANE HALL, born at New York, N. Y., 4 Oct. 1839, daughter of Isaac and Elizabeth (Rew).

THOMAS5 WHITCOMB (Asa, 4 John,3 Jonathan,2 John1) was born at Lancaster 1774, died at Lexington 3 Mar. 1829, g. s., son of Asa and Betty (Sawyer). Asa Whitcomb was a prominent citizen of Lancaster and a colonel in the Revolution. Thomas was a physician and settled at Lexington about 1804 on what is now known as Vine Brook Farm. He is said to have been a capable physician and had a good practice. He was a member of the Mass. Medical Society.


He married 7 June 1810 MRS. HANNAH (BRIDGE) CHANDLER, born 30 Apr. 1771, died 1 Feb. 1843,* daughter of John5 and Hannah (Reed) Bridge and widow of Joseph5 Chandler.

i. ELIZABETH BRIDGE,6 b. 13 Jan. 1814; m. 25 Oct. 1849 NATHANIEL HAR- RIS GERRY, d. 5 Jan. 1869, aged 53 y. 11 m., s. of Nathaniel of Salem and Nancy Robinson (Berry); d. 7 Mar. 1883. Mr. Gerry was a man of marked ability, a printer and newspaper correspondent. Mrs. Gerry was descended from some of the leading families of Lexington and had inherited considerable property. In her later years, apparently she was reduced to poverty and was cared for in a large measure by neighbors and friends. After her death it was found that she had left over two thousand dollars, which for lack of direct heirs, and by an act of the Legislature of 1885, was added to the Bridge Charitable Fund.

He must have been of some dignity, for in seating the meeting- house in 1731 he was placed in the second seat below.

GEORGE OLIVER3 WHITING (David,2 Oliver1) was born at Wil- ton, N. H., 20 Mar. 1841, younger son of David, born at Wilton, N. H., 26 Aug. 1810, and grandson of Oliver and Fanny (Stiles). His mother, Emma Spaulding, was born at Wilton, N. H., 13 July 1813, daughter of Isaac and Mary (Flynn). He was descended from Rev. Samuel Whiting, from Boston, Lincolnshire, England, who settled at Saugus, which was later divided and the new part called Lynn in Mr. Whiting's honor.


He represented Wilton in the General Court of N. H. 1867-68. He became a resident of Lexington in 1874. He is past president of the Lexington Historical Society, and president of the Wilton Railroad, C. Brigham Milk Co., Elm Farm Milk Co., and the Lexington Savings Bank.


He married at Nashua, 1 May 1865, LAURA MARIA BOWERS, born at Nashua 12 Mar. 1839, daughter of Jesse and Laura (Fletcher).
