BLINN


RICHARD DELANO4 BLINN (Richard D.,3 James,2 James1) was born at Boston 31 July 1832, died at Chicago, Ill., 27 Feb. 1906, son of Richard Delano and Harriet (Gragg), and grandson of James and Abigail (Delano) of Woolwich, Me. The Blinn ancestor is supposed to be Peter Blinn of Weathersfield, Conn. By the Delano line he is descended from John Alden and Priscilla Mullins. He moved to Lexington from Bedford in 1852. He was a member of the Legisla- ture in 1869 and 1874; for many years was actively associated with the Lexington railroad, in several capacities, at one time being its president. He was a member of the first board of trustees of the Lexington Savings Bank.


He married 26 Apr. 1855 CHARLOTTE PIPER, born at Bedford 30 Oct. 1833, died 15 Jan. 1909, daughter of William Henry and Eliza- beth Swain7 (Lawrence).

EDWARD PENNIMAN3 BLISS (Henry,2 Jesse1) was born at Cam- bridge 4 Dec. 1850, son of Henry Penniman, born at West Brook- field 1 Feb. 1820, and grandson of Jesse and Mary (Penniman). His mother was Delia Maria Warren, born at Grafton 9 Jan. 1822, daughter of John Warren and Susanna (Grout). The first ancestor to come to this country, Thomas Bliss, came from Devonshire, England, in 1635 and settled at Braintree.


He was graduated from Harvard, A.B. 1873, M.A. 1874, came to Lexington in 1882 and served twice on the school committee. Chosen selectman, 1912.


He married at Hamilton, 1 May 1880, MARY CRESSY MCKAY, born at Boston 4 Jan. 1856, daughter of Donald and Mary Cressy (Litchfield).

1. THOMAS3 BLODGETT (Samuel,2 Thomas1) was born at Woburn 26 Feb. 1661, died at Lexington 29 Sept. 1740, son of Samuel, born in England, died at Woburn 21 May 1720, and Ruth (Eggleton), and grandson of Thomas and Susanna ( ).


Thomas Blodgett was a subscriber to the precinct meeting-house, 1692, was first taxed 1694, and settled on present Adams Street near the so-called Gibbs place. Both he and his wife were admitted to the Lexington church, 5 Mar. 1699, by a letter of dismission from the church at Woburn. At a town meeting held 9 Jan. 1713, he was appointed one of a committee of five to build a new meeting-house. After the town was incorporated, he held the office of tythingman, and in 1717, was an assessor, and also in 1713, '18, '20, '22, '24 a selectman. He represented the town in the General Court, 1719, and '21. His will was dated 26 Oct. 1738, probated 24 Nov. 1740.


He married 11 Nov. 1685 REBECCA TIDD, of Woburn, died 8 Mar. 1750, daughter of John2 and Rebecca (Wood).

His mother was Sarah Elizabeth Chapman, born at Tewksbury 3 Sept. 1843, daughter of Franklin Baldwin and Hannah (Kittredge). He became a resident of Lexington in June 1903. He is a Free Mason, was town auditor of Billerica 1901-02-03, and a member of the school board of Lexington in 1909-10.


He married first at Billerica, 22 Aug. 1889, JESSIE UNDERHILL, born at Billerica 22 Aug. 1868, died 23 June 1897, daughter of Rufus Kittredge and Eluthera Debora (Webster); secondly at Milford, N. H., 17 June 1903, SARAH JOSEPHINE FISKE, born at Cambridge 3 July 1867, daughter of Charles Freeman and Emma (Bailey).

The ancestor of this family who first came to this country was Samuel H. Blodgett, who came from England and set- tled at Haverhill. His mother, Mary Abby Little, was born at Methuen 29 Feb. 1844, daughter of James Melvin and Ruth H. (Brown).

His name appeared on a document, dated 1776, and signed by leading citi- zens of Lexington, declaring "before God and the world" that they would be true to the cause of liberty and to each other. He served in the Continental line in the Revolutionary War. 1. NATHANIEL1 BOWMAN was born in England in 1608, died 21 Jan. 1662, son of Robert and Ann (Beresford). The family origin- ated near Kirk-Oswald, Carlisle. The earliest church records of Kirk-Oswald were destroyed.


He came to Watertown about 1630, his name appears on the re- cords in 1636-37, he bought land at Cambridge Farms of Edward Goffe in 1635 and settled there in 1649, near the present Arlington line.


He married ANNA ( ), and she probably died first as no men- tion is made of her in his will dated 21 Oct. 1679 and proved 4 Apr. 1682.

In the administration of the estate, 1 Apr. 1698, mention is made of the widow, Martha, who was guardian of the two minors, Samuel and Jonathan, the sons "Frances," Nathaniel and John and John Evileth for Mary Bowman.


He married 26 Sept. 1661 MARTHA SHERMAN, born 21 Feb. 1641, daughter of Capt. John and Martha (Palmer) of Watertown. She was probably the Martha who died 25 Feb. 1728-29.
