Island, 1693. The description signified that it was then bounded partly by land of John Munroe, by the ministerial land, and by lands of Matthew Bridge, and extended in one direction to Vine Brook.

iv. RICHARD, drowned in a pond in Maine in 1719; at the time of his death he owned real estate at Lexington.

In 1714 he opened the first public house in the place, which he continued for a long period. He was constable 1727; on school com- mittee, 1733; selectman 1741-42, '44; and assessor 1746. He was admitted to the church 24 Aug. 1735.

In his will dated 1764, with a codicil dated 1765, he mentioned daughters Mary Hall, Sarah Hill, and Jane Stone, and sons John and Benjamin. He made his son-in-law, Samuel Stone, executor. He not only owned land in Lexington, but also in Templeton, hav- ing a proprietor's lot of 40' acres there in 1735. He gave this land to his sons Benjamin and John.


He married first 12 July 1709 ELIZABETH BRADSHAW of Medford, born 21 - 1688, died 21 Feb. 1722, aged 33, daughter of John and Mary ( ); secondly 6 Dec. 1722 MRS. He died possessed of a large property for that period, and among his chattels were a male negro, inventoried at £350, and a female negro apprized at £100. "The home Land" was described "Con- taining by Estmation Eighty too Acres with a Manfion houfe & Barn X Corn house upon it Confisting of Pasturage Mowing plow- ing orchard & wood land Lying upon both Sides of the Great Coun- try Road Leading to Concord." This mansion house was situated on the place where David W. Muzzcy now resides, and the land extended down upon Waltham St. to the place now called Grape Vine Corner. He owned land also at Woburn and Townsend. He was assessor 1743, '49, and a selectman 1750.

13. AMOS5 MUZZY (Amos,4 Benjamin,3 Benjamin,2 Robert1), born 24 May 1741, died 19 Dec. 1822.


The remains of Amos Muzzy and his two wives were placed in a tomb in the churchyard at Lexington, and covered with a slab bearing this inscription, "The northwest corner of this tomb is reserved for Mr. Amos Muzzy and wives, and no other corpse to be laid there." He was in the Battle of Lexington 1775,* five months at Ticonderoga 1776, and three months at Cambridge 1778. He was selectman 1786-88.


He married first 29 Nov. 1764 ABIGAIL BOWERS of Billerica, born 12 Oct. 1744, died 15 Mar. 1803, daughter of Josiah and Abi- gail (Thompson); secondly 25 Dec. 1806 MRS.ABIGAIL (INGOLDSBY) SMITH, died 18 Feb. 1814, aged 63, widow of Capt. Joseph 6 Smith of Lexington. They were admitted to the church 26 Jan. 1766.

It was possibly this John who was a member of the school com- mittee 1830, '31, '36, '37; assessor 1836; representative 1825, '27, and appointed a justice of the peace 1826. He resided on the Con- cord road.


He married 3 Oct. 1811 REBECCA LINCOLN of Hingham, born 26 Oct. 1789, died at Hingham 18 July 1864, daughter of Seth and Mary (Fearing). She was descended from two of the oldest families of that town. After the death of her husband she returned to Hing- ham.

He graduated from Harvard in 1793, and was ordained at Sulli- van, N. H., 7 Feb. 1798. He left there in 1828 and returned with his family to Lexington where he was a member of the school committee in 1830 and 1834.


He married 20 Sept. 1798 ANNA MUNROE, born 9 May 1771, died 19 June 1850, daughter of William4 and Anna (Smith).

He began business as a trader at Boston and remained until about 1830 when he returned to Lexington. He was a leading pop- ular man in town, selectman 1840, '43, '48; member of the school committee 1831-34, '36, '38, '40; representative 1843 and justice of the peace 1846.


He married 19 June 1822 ELIZABETH WOOD, born at Newbury- port 27 June 1798, died 29 Aug. 1870, daughter of David and Elizabeth Bird (Coffin).

He entered the serv- ice 29 Apr. 1861 as quartermaster sergeant 12th Mass. Inf'y (Web- ster's regiment) and was mustered 26 June 1861. Appointed quarter- master 17 May 1862 with rank of first lieutenant. Captain and commissary of subsistence 21 Mar. 1864, and assigned to 2d Brigade, 2d Division, Ist Army Corps. Brevet-major and commissary of subsist- ence 8 July 1865, and discharged 13 Oct. 1865 at Columbia, S. C., under General Order No. 79 of 1 May 1865. During his entire service he was continuously and faithfully on duty in the various positions to which he was assigned, which included the Headquarters of the fol- lowing commands - 2d Brigade, 2d Division, 1st Army Corps, 2d Divi- sion, Ist Army Corps, 6th Army Corps, Col. Wainwright's artillery and Col. Burton's reserve artillery, both in 1st Army Corps, Col. C. H. Tompkin's artillery of 6th Army Corps, Department of the South, at Hilton Head and District of Western South Carolina at Columbia. One of his important duties was that he was designated, under General Order No. 13 of 10 Apr. 1865, to deliver subsistence to Gen. Lee's destitute army after the surrender at Appomattox. In the state militia he has held two commissions in the 2d Brigade, captain and engineer 13 Aug. 1868 to 1873, and captain and aide-de- camp from 1873 to 1876. At the time of the town's "Centennial of the Battle of Lexington" he commanded the battalion of Minute Men. He was a Free Mason, and collector of taxes from Jan. 1898 to July 1908.

22. ARTEMAS7 BOWERS MUZZEY* (Amos, 6 Amos,5 Amos, 4 Benja- min,3 Benjamin,2 Robert1), born 21 Sept. 1802, died at Cambridge 21 Apr. 1892.


He graduated from Harvard, 1824, A.B. 1827, graduated from the Divinity School 1828, received the degree of LL.B. 185-, and was ordained pastor of the Unitarian Society at Framingham 1830. He resigned that position at the end of three years, and became pastor successively of the Unitarian churches at Cambridgeport, Lee St., Cambridge, Concord, N. H., and Newburyport, retiring from the last in 1865 and afterwards making his residence at Cambridge, and at the same time supplying the Unitarian pulpit at Chestnut Hill, Newton, for a period of ten or twelve years, thus concluding his continuous service as a preacher, though occasionally meeting calls in that capacity. He published numerous books, sermons and essays. He was one of the oldest members of the Mass. Horticul- tural Society both in point of age and membership, and was one of the original members of the Unitarian Association. He was actively interested in educational matters, and served for several years on the Cambridge school committee, and for part of the time was its chairman. He was an overseer of Harvard from 1860 to 1866, and for more than forty years was on committees to examine the stu-

dents of this college in moral and intellectual philosophy and his- tory, and was also on a committee for the Divinity School.


He married first at Boston, 27 Jan. 1831, HEPSIBETH PATTERSON of Boston, born 9 Dec. 1804, died 16 Apr. 1859, daughter of Enoch and Mary (Adams) of Boston; secondly 23 Oct. 1860 LUCY JONES MOSELEY of Newburyport, died at Cambridge 30 Nov. 1891, daugh- ter of Hon. Ebenezer and Mary A. (Oxnard) of Newburyport.

iv. DAVID PATTERSON, b. 8 Nov. 1838; m. 17 Feb. 1876 SARAH ABBY TURNER of Stow; d. at Cambridge 3 Aug. 1910. They resided at Cambridge. He practised law at Cambridge previous to the Rebellion. He enlisted 23 May 1861 in the 1st Mass. Inf'y, and was in the first battle of Bull Run, Va., July 1861; was six months a private, then commissioned second lieutenant; was in the battles of Roanoke Island and Newbern, N. C., under Gen. Burnside. He was promoted to first lieutenant, and detailed by Gen. Banks as deputy provost marshal of Baton Rouge, and New Iberia, La .; served in the campaigns of Port Hudson and Red River, La., and was a member of the "forlorn hope" at the former place. He was in all the battles in the Shenandoah Valley, Va., and at their close was detailed on Gen. Sheridan's staff. He was in the 3d Regiment of Cavalry on the plains of Colorado. He served throughout the entire war, from 23 May 1861 to 8 Oct. 1865, when he was pro- moted and discharged as lieutenant-colonel. Graduated from Harvard Divinity School in 1869, and preached several years at Littleton and Stow. Child: Herbert Sprague,9 b. at Cambridge 22 Oct. 1878.

He entered the service as citizen clerk to the quartermaster of 12th Mass. Infantry, 23 July 1861, and was mustered as quarter- master sergeant in same regiment 6 June 1862. Commissioned second lieutenant 9 Oct. 1862 and appointed acting quartermas- ter. First lieutenant 31 July 1863 and held the full rank of quartermaster from 30 Apr. 1864 to date of discharge 8 July 1864.


Later served as citizen clerk in the Commissary Dept. at Hilton Head and Columbia, S. C., until 13 Oct. 1865. During his entire service he was continually on active duty with the regiment to which he was much attached, as was evidenced by his declining a commission as captain and acting quartermaster for the brigade.


He was engaged in the lumber business and established the Lex- ington Lumber Co. He was a Free Mason. He was elected select- man in 1890 and served continuously until his death, being chair- man from Mar. 1896.


He married 7 Oct. 1868 ANNA MATILDA GOULD, born at Boston 20 Mar. 1841, died 17 July 1872, daughter of Thomas,3 Jr., and Lydia A. (Teel).
