He enlisted in the expedition against Canada in 1760 and suffered hardships for which his father presented a petition to the General Court for pecuniary recompense. He was in the fifth campaign to Ticonderoga in 1775, and the 15th at Providence, R. I., June 1778. He early became a resident of Lexington.

He received a common school education, went to sea at the age of sixteen, at twenty learned the carpenter's trade at Boston. On 1 May 1876 he was appointed a police officer on the Boston force; in July 1888 came to Lexington as a police officer and at present (1912) is serving as Chief of Police. He is a Mason.

1. WILLIAM1 GAMMELL came to this country about 1740 and set- tled at Boston.


He married at Medford, 29 Dec. 1748, ANNA PAGE, who died 1764. Children, born at Boston:


i. JOHN,2 b. 28 May 1752; engaged in the destruction of the tea and also of the stamp office; immediately after the investment of Boston he moved his family, consisting of a wife and one child, to Lexington; on 18 June 1775 he enlisted in the Revolutionary army. He m. 14 Oct. 1773 MARGARET URANN and had sixteen children.


2. ii. WILLIAM, bapt. 23 July 1758.


2. WILLIAM2 GAMMELL (William1), born at Boston, baptized 23 July 1758.


He lived at Boston until he was fourteen, when he moved to Chelmsford. He joined the Revolutionary army.


He married THANKFUL KEYES of Chelmsford, and moved thence to Hillsboro, N. H., about 1779.

He came to Lexington in 1806 and married 19 May 1810, he then of Charlestown, RHODA ROBINSON, born 17 May 1781, died 11 Sept. 1861, daughter of Joseph4 and Betty (Jones-Hadley) of . Lexington.
