DAVID4 SAVILLE (Thomas,3 Jesse,2 Thomas1) was born at Gloucester 2 June 1804, died at San Francisco, Cal., July 1868, son of Thomas, born at Gloucester 18 Aug. 1764, and grandson of Jesse and Martha (Babson). His mother, Betsey Haraden, was born 15 June 1764. The ancestor, Thomas Saville, perhaps from Malden, settled at Gloucester.
He lived at Gloucester until 1845 when he removed to Charles- town, and in 1849 to Lexington. In youth he accompanied his father on voyages and finally became master of a vessel. He was engaged in the West India and South American trade and also made

voyages to the Baltic and Mediterranean. He left the sea about 1835, was in the legislature 1836 and '38, and an inspector in the Boston Custom-house for some years. After 1849 he spent much time in California, but claimed Lexington as his place of residence.

Later he took his family to San Francisco, where they lived until 1873 when he returned and entered into partnership under the name of Whitcher & Saville; he bought his partner's interest in 1875 and continued the business until 1888 when he sold it to George W. Spaulding.
He was town clerk 1868-69, 1874-75, 1879-1900, treasurer 1865, 1891-94, assessor 1873-75, 1890-94, tax collector, appointed jus- tice of the peace for seven terms, representative to the General Court 1883, and is a trustee of the Lexington Savings Bank. He was appointed postmaster 7 Mar. 1901, now serving his tenth year.

AUGUSTUS ELWIN3 SCOTT (Rila,2 Samuel1) was born at Franklin 18 Aug. 1838, youngest son of Rila, born at Bellingham 4 Apr. 1795, and grandson of Samuel and Sarah (Ballou). His mother was Sarah S. He fitted for college at the Milford High School, and entered Brown University, but went finally to Tufts and graduated in 1858. He taught in the Abington High School for two years, then was principal of the Lexington High School for six years. He served on the school committee from 1871-74. Having studied law while teaching he was admitted to the Suffolk bar in 1867 and practises at Boston. He was representative in the state legislature in 1879-80 and served in the senate in 1885. He was also one of the justices of the Middlesex Central District Court, president of the Appala- chian Club, and is a trustee of the Lexington Savings Bank, having been a member of the first board.

1. JOSEPH2 SIMONDS (William1) was born at Woburn 18 Oct. 1652, died 12 Aug. 1733, g. s., third son of William and Mrs. Judith (Phippen) Hayward. His father settled in that part of Woburn now Cummingsville, where he built a house which was used as a fort during the early Indian wars.
He and his father-in-law came from Woburn about 1681. He was one of the largest subscribers to the first meeting-house in 1692. His name is also on the first tax bill in 1693, and was among the eight or ten highest taxpayers on the list. He was appointed one of three care-takers of the ammunition stores in 1700. He was a subscriber to the fund for the public common in 1711, and one of the selectmen in 1712-13, at the first organization under the town charter. In 1695 we find the name of Sergeant Joseph Simonds among the as- sessors. Ensign in 1712. He also served on the school committee and filled other important offices in the town.
