He was a member of Capt. Parker's company 1775; of the detach- ment called to Cambridge 6-10 May 1775; and also with those who were called to Cambridge 17 and 18 June 1775. He was a sub- scriber to the eighth campaign of three months to the Jerseys in 1776 and the fourteenth campaign at Cambridge for three months 1778. He served 19 April 1775.


He married 20 Oct. 1757 ABIGAIL SMITH, born 21 May 1739, daughter of Jonathan5 and Abigail (Stratton).

21. JOSEPH6 SMITH (Hezekiah,5 Joseph,4 Joseph,3 Thomas,2 John1), born 21 Aug. 1743, died 19 Aug. 1805.


He rose to the rank of captain, was selectman 1785, '89, '91 and '93; assessor 1796-98 and 1804; one of the Committee of Cor- respondence 1778; active in military affairs; and also belonged to Capt. Parker's company, serving 19 April 1775, and one of the de- tachment sent to Cambridge 17 and 18 June 1775; and served as sergeant in the sixteenth campaign at Providence, for six weeks, August 1778.


He married first 17 Jan. 1765 LUCY STONE, born at Rutland 21 Mar. 1742-43, died 19 June 1772, daughter of Jonas5 and Eliza- beth (Adams); secondly 13 Mar. 1777 ABIGAIL INGOLDSBY, born 13 Oct. 1750, died 18 Feb. 1814; she married secondly 25 Dec. 1806, as his second wife, Amos Muzzy.

He married POLLY BARBER of Lexington, died 12 May 1838, aged 84, daughter of a captain in the British service. They were admitted to the church 14 May 1780.
