He was major of the Lexington Artillery. His grand-daughter writes: "My father's brothers and sisters were all born in the same house, the old Nelson- Hastings house which stood on the road to Concord, a back road running from the point where the old Viles tavern used to stand, and parallel to the 'main-travelled road.' The house where my father's family were born is where my seven brothers and sisters were born. The confusion between Lincoln and Lexington comes from the fact of my grandfather's farm lying in both towns, and the dividing line placed the house within the Lincoln boundary, but all the relations were all with Lexington."
