He resided in the house afterwards occupied by Rufus Merriam, near Lexington Common, which he kept as a public house. Here Capt. Parker and his men assembled on the evening of 18 April 1775, and they went forth from this house on the approach of the British early the next morning. During the following encounter shots were fired from this house upon the British, after the attack had begun upon the Americans who were posted on the Common near by, and some of the clapboards bear evidence that the fire was returned. He was a member of Capt. Parker's company, 1775, and held the offices of selectman and assessor.

BURBANK
COL. SULLIVAN2 BURBANK (Samuel1) was born at Holliston 8 Oct. 1776, died 30 Sept. 1862, son of Samuel* and Eunice (Kendall).
He came to Lexington in 1801 and opened a store in the village. On the breaking out of the War of 1812 he received a commission as a lieutenant of United States Infantry. His duties were at first those of a recruiting officer, and in August, 1812, he marched a force from Boston to Plattsburg, and during the following winter he was again detailed on the recruiting service, and in April, 1813, marched with about one hundred recruits by way of Greenbush, N. Y., to Sack- ett's Harbor, where he arrived on 29 May, just in time to assist in repelling an attack made by the British on that place, under the leadership of Sir George Provost. He accompanied the army under the American General Wilkinson down the St. Lawrence, in Novem- ber, 1813, and was present in the action at Christler's Fields, 11 Nov. 1813. Later he was stationed with the army at French Mills, and still later at Sackett's Harbor and Buffalo. He was in the battles of Chippewa, 5 July 1814, and Niagara, 25 July 1814. As one of the famous Col. Miller's regiment, the "I will try" regiment, he helped storm the battery in the latter action, and there received a severe wound in the shoulder, and for his bravery and good conduct was honored with the brevet rank of major.
* Samuel Burbank was a soldier of the Revolution. He held the office of lieutenant at the battle of Bunker Hill, and afterwards commanded a company which marched to Rhode Island, in the army summoned there under General Sullivan, for whom he named his eldest son. He resided at Holliston and Fitchburg, and lastly at Cavendish, Vt.

Consequent upon the ending of the War in 1815, the army was reduced in size, but Major Burbank remained in the service as a captain in the Fifth Regiment of Infantry. He served in the peace establishment at almost every part of the frontier from the St. Lawrence River to the Sabine River. He was stationed at Detroit, at the outlet of Lake Huron, at Fort Snelling, at Rock Island, where he had the command for about four years, at Jefferson Barracks, at Fort Mackinaw, Fort Gibson, Ark., Fort Jessop, La., and at many other western forts. He was promoted to the rank of major in the Seventh Regiment, U.S. Infantry, and to the rank of lieutenant- colonel. He resigned his commission in 1839, at the age of 63, on account of infirmities, and retired to private life. He represented the town of Lexington in the General Court, 1846-1847, and was highly respected as a man and a citizen.
He married BETSEY BROWN, born 30 June 1783, died 3 Mar. 1860, daughter of James4 and Betty (Reed).

WILLIAM ALLEN3 BUTLER (Cyrus,2 Richard1) was born at Bir- mingham, Ohio, 1 Mar. 1837, died 13 Jan. 1912, son of Cyrus, born at Bridgewater, Conn., 1799, and grandson of Richard and Ruth (Russell). His mother, Julia Ann Steele Sanger, was born at New Hartford, N. Y., 2 May 1809, daughter of Richard and Ruth (Tis- dale). Richard Butler was the first ancestor who came to this country and settled at Hartford, Conn. He came to Lexington in 1895.
