GENEALOGIES
After graduating from Bridgewater Normal School, he taught with much success at Medfield and Watertown. As a young man at Mendon he came under the strong and kindly influence of Rev. Adin Ballou, which, in part at least, determined him to enter the ministry. He was a man of large frame, robust body and strong features (not unlike those of Franklin); a genial, sympathetic but determined temperament and a commanding personality. As a preacher, he was devoutly earnest, compassionate, plain-spoken, forcible, pure in diction, simple and natural in style. His sermons were, largely founded upon and characteristic of his two great, favorite themes, "The Fatherhood of God" and "The Brother- hood of Man."
He enjoyed innocent fun and possessed a great wealth of stories, reminiscences and traditions. He was deeply interested and widely read in history and biography, and as the years passed he showed an ever increasing fondness for the history of Lexington. Largely to his good understanding, foresight and labors is due the preserva- tion of records, relics and historic shrines of this historic town. "Unconsciously almost, and naturally, he became the voice of Lexington's noble memories. His figure alert, white-haired, vigorous in speech and gesture, kindling with feeling, hearty in laughter and good cheer .. . he reaped, as few are permitted to reap in life, the genuine respect, reverence and affection of his fellow men."*

He was educated at Uxbridge Academy, Westfield Normal School, and Meadville Theological School, 1854. He was ordained at Lex- ington 20 Sept. 1854, dismissed at his own request 30 Nov. 1856 and became pastor of a new society at Milwaukee, Wis. He served in the Civil War as chaplain in an Illinois regiment, but owing to impaired health, left the service and was settled over a society at Brooklyn, N. Y. He was a man of unusually brilliant talents, a fine preacher, and zealous and devoted in his profession.
