He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, M.D., 1837. He studied at the Divinity School of Cambridge and was ordained at Windsor, Vt., in 1848. He became a resident of Lexington in 1880.
He married at Philadelphia, Pa., MARY HENRIETTA SANDFORD, born at Hartford, Conn., died at Boston 10 Feb. 1895, daughter of Isaac and Dorcas (Thomas).

York, N. Y., 26 May 1806, and grandson of Joseph and Sarah (Dodge). His mother was Susan Bard, born at Hyde Park on Hudson, N. Y., 7 Feb. 1812, daughter of William and Catherine (Cruger). The ancestor, Sir Henry Sandes or Sandys, came from Yorkshire, England, in 1636, and went to Jamestown, Va., but later in 1638 or '40 became one of the founders of Rowley.
When about twenty years old he entered the U.S. Navy; served as secretary to Rear Admiral Sands. In 1860 served on board frig- ate Congress destroyed by ram at Newport News, Va .; thence transferred to U.S. steam sloop of war Seminole; thence to the Shamrock, flagship, where he served on the staff of Commodore William McComb until the end of the war. While in command of a small gunboat on special service, it was destroyed by a tor- pedo in Albemarle Sound, N. C., in Dec. 1864. Being unfit for further service he retired from the navy in 1865. He became a resi- dent of Lexington in Dec. 1904.
He married at New York, N. Y., 27 Dec. 1893 ELLA LOUISE FAYE, born at Brooklyn, N. Y., daughter of Thomas and Marion (Copeland).
