CHARLES LEONARD3 BARTLETT (Bailey,2 Enoch1) was born at Haverhill 15 Aug. 1802, died 17 Mar. 1883, the fifteenth child of Bailey,* born at Haverhill 29 Jan. 1750, and grandson of Enoch and Anna (Bayley). His mother, Peggy White, was born at Hav- erhill 2 Mar. 1766, daughter of John and Sarah (Lebaron). The ancestor who came to this country was John Bartlett from England who settled at Newbury.


He was engaged as a Mexican consul at Boston. He became a resident of Lexington in the spring of 1878.

BATCHELLER


BROOKS TRULL2 BATCHELLER f (Capt. Joseph1) was born at Bil- lerica 7 Jan. 1813, died 21 Aug. 1902, son of Capt. Joseph, born at Marblehead 27 Jan. 1773, died 14 Oct. 1824, and Hannah (Trull), born 1773, died 10 May 1859.


He began life as a towboy on the Middlesex Canal and became captain of a packet boat. When the canal was discontinued became a stage driver and eventually settled as a stable keeper at Boston. In 1867 he purchased a residence at Lexington. He was elected to the State Senate in 1874. He was a member of the first board of trustees of the Lexington Savings Bank.

The first Bayley ancestor who came to this country was John Bayley (then spelled "Bayly") who came from Chippenham, Witshire County, England, in 1635, and settled at Salisbury (Point). His mother was Vesta Capen, born at Dorchester 24 Oct. 1826, daughter of Gen- eral Aaron and Izannah (White). Izannah White was descended from Peregrine White, born on the Mayflower in Massachusetts Bay.

He was graduated (A.B.) from Dartmouth, 1885, and Boston University Law School, 1891 (LL.B.), completing the three years' course in two years with rank of "magna cum laude." Member of Phi Beta Kappa and Delta Kappa Epsilon. He was admitted to practice at Suffolk County Bar in 1891; to practice in United States Courts in 1898. Associated in law practice with John H. Colby from 1892 till Mr. Colby's death in 1909. Member of school committee, Lexington, 1896-98; representative to General Court from 29th Middlesex Representative District, comprising the towns of Lex- ington and Arlington, 1909-1910, being the Republican candidate.


Mr. Bayley has been active in the work of the Bailey-Bayley Family Association formed in 1893 to gather and place in perma- nent form the genealogy of the branches of the family, and has served as president of the Association 1900-1902, and is at present its secretary. He delivered the Memorial Day Address before the Lexington Post, G. A. R., in 1905; also the Memorial Address on the tenth anniversary of the dedication of the Tenney Memorial Library building at Newbury, Vt., 10 June 1907. He was a temporary resi- dent of Lexington for part of each year, 1888-1892, and became a permanent resident in 1892.

His mother was Maatje Van Zetten, born in Province Zeeland, Holland, 8 Aug. 1814. Gerrit Jan Bennink came from Holland and settled at Roxbury.


After graduating from the Harvard Grammar School of Cam- bridge at the age of fourteen, he attended high school at Cambridge for six months and then went to work for Dana W. Hyde, in the dry goods business, and has been in that business ever since. He is a Knight Templar, 32° Mason and president of the Retail Merchants Association, Lawrence, where he now lives. He delivered the Me- morial Day Address before the Lexington Post, G. A. R., in 1909.

The first ancestor to come to this country was John Biglo, who came from England probably and settled at Watertown.


He was in the wholesale fruit and produce business over forty years, president of the "Boston Fruit and Produce Exchange," a justice of the peace, Knight Templar, and a member of the Mass. Legislature 1877-78. He came to Lexington from Watertown in 1894.


He married at Brighton, 27 Apr. 1848, SARAH BROOKS, born at Brighton 15 Mar. 1819, daughter of Samuel and Jane (Hill).
