CRONE
1. LOUIS ERNEST2 CRONE (John1) was born at Grimma, Saxony, 30 Sept. 1826, died at Lexington 22 Aug. 1891.
He came directly from Germany, settled at first at Peterboro, N. H., resided for a time at Boston, and became a resident of Lex- ington in 1869. His vocation was that of a cabinet maker until he entered the army.
At the breaking out of the Civil War he enlisted in the 22d Mass., and lost his arm at Gaines' Mills, one of the Seven Days' Battles before Richmond, in 1862, in rescuing the colors of his regiment - which are now among those so carefully cherished in the State House. For "gallantry in the field " he was commissioned 2d lieuten- ant in September, 1862, and 1st lieutenant in October, 1862. Minus an arm, and with his wound unhealed, he returned to the front, and as acting captain served at Chancellorsville, where he received a flesh wound in the leg. He was transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps and later sent to Indianapolis on provost and guard duty where he remained two years, part of the time being in command of the U.S. Arsenal then being built there. In August, 1866, he was commissioned captain in the Regular Army, serving in different garrisons four years, when he was placed on the retired list. From this time until his death, he was agent for the National Soldiers' Home.
