5. JONAS5 CLARKE (Thomas, 4 John, 3 John,2 Hugh1), born 14 Dec. 1730, died 15 Nov. 1805.
He was graduated from Harvard 1752. The church of Lexington extended a call to him to become their pastor, 19 May 1755, and he was ordained 5 Nov. 1755. Afterwards his life was interwoven with the history of this town, and Hon. Edward Everett thus eulogized him: "Mr. Clarke was a man of high rank in his profession - a man of practical piety, a learned theologian, correct, and pointed, be- yond the standard of the day, and a most intelligent, resolute, and ardent champion of the popular cause. He was connected by mar- riage with the family of John Hancock. To this circumstance no doubt may properly be ascribed some portion of his interest in the political movements of the day; while on the mind of Hancock an intimacy with Mr. Clarke was calculated to have a strong and salu- tary influence."

iii. JONAS, b. 27 Nov. 1760; moved to Kennebunk, Me., where he m. July 1789 SARAH WATTS of Portland, Me., who d. his widow 5 Nov. 1842, aged 72; d. at Kennebunk, Me., 8 Nov. 1828. He was collector of the port there, and judge of probate for York County.
iv. MARY, b. 4 May 1762; d. 13 July 1805; m. 31 Mar. 1790 REV. HENRY WARE of Hingham, afterwards Hollis Professor of Divinity in Harvard University. They had ten children: Henry,7 the eldest son, grad. from, Harvard 1812, was ordained over the Second Church, Boston, 1817, and later appointed Professor of Pulpit Eloquence and Pastoral Care in Harvard University. William, studicd theology, and settled first in New York City, and afterwards at Waltham and West Cam- bridge (now Arlington). He distinguished himself as an author. John was a physician, and filled for a long period the chair of Professor of the Theory and Practice of Physic in the Medical Department of Harvard University.

FRED DARWIN3 CLOYES (Philip B.,2 Elijah1) was born at Cam- bridge 26 Sept. 1873, son of Philip Beach, born at Salisbury, Vt., 15 Sept. 1838, and grandson of Elijah and Mariah (Beach). His mother, Jennie Emeline Smead, was born at Salisbury, Vt., 8 Aug. 1840, daughter of Dennis and Cyntha (Maynard). John Cloyes, the original ancestor in this country, came from the south of Eng- land and settled at Watertown in 1637.
He was educated in the schools of Middlebury, Vt., and at Ver- mont Academy, Saxton's River, Vt., and became a resident of Lexington in 1889. He is a salesman and Free Mason.

HISTORY OF LEXINGTON
He was one of the early settlers of the precinct of Cambridge Farms at the organization in 1693. He was taxed in the minister's rate for that year, and also for the purchase of the ministerial land. In 1697 he was one of a committee to look after that land and was in 1711 a subscriber to pay for the land purchased for a common.
