Public education in Springfield ts . 1.,'s':"rir new thing. Just 61 years ài' a movement by lesding citizena was started to establish the first public school in the city .. which. ;- perly speaking. was little more thin a town at that time.

However, that does not mean that there were no schools bere. There were excellent private schools. but . co publie ones.

-

Public meetings were called. Platu ! were dharussed. both pro and con.

movement. Public education

. that time was an Innovation.

Earle settlers of Springfield. well as those of the entire state, held ' the ided' that education. like re- ilztos. mas a private matter. It Was the right of the parent to decide ; whether be wished to educate his children. And with that right went the duty to educate them at bla oup expense.

-

Opurned "Charity" Schoolt. The frat schools In Springfield sed in Missouri were private schools -

The private school was followed by " the subscription school. The fami- 1les In & community to ployed teacher and paid bim according to the number of children sent by esch family Sometimes the community hullt a log vr.col house and some- times school was' held in bomes of the children or the teacher.

The nimmt movement in Missouri to establiah & system of public schools was inade'in St. Louis in 1817, but the first one was not opened until 1838. .

Another rewon the publto school morement wan slow to make headway wu that to the wealth!er classes it. was looked down upon as bearing the stigma of charity. They refused to send their children to them.

l'irat School In 1832.

However. after the Civil war the people of thr 'n'e Bankened to the need of better education. The conm stitution: of 1865 emphasized public education and made provision for the os'at!'. : :::: : school districta and financial meats of support.

The first schoolhouse in Spring- fic! was built early In 1832. 1. stood on what le bow the corner of Main and College streets. It, like alf early schoolhouses, wu a one- room affair. built of loga. It had a loose plank floor. a door shutter end a attck and city chimney.

This school, as well as others that followed. were "par schodis."

The Civil war was a slofiny ons for ]

these schools. During the four years that it raged, most of these schools were closed.

Two years after the close of the war, public sentiment had so crystal- Ized that prominent citizens took up the movement for free public schools. However, they were not without op- position. One citizen, in . flery speech made on the public square, denounced the movement as "Illegal. unjust, and Infamous," and de- clared he would oppose it to the end.

Nevertheless, those in favor of it continued to work, and in the fall an election was called to select the city's first school board. The follow- Ing men were chosen: James Baker, W. C. Hornbesk, Charles Sheppard. Dr. E. T. Robbertson. J. M. Kelley and William R. Gorton.

This board proceeded to select sites for buildings, determined the levy for the school tax and made plans for the procuring of money to erect the buildings.

In the meantime suitable pieces for school were procured In rented buildings and the first term of pub- lic schoola opened on September 9. 1867. The high school enrollment was 48. and the elementary 204.
