Fatal Auto Crash With Tram Blamed To Unlighted Car


Martin Philip Melton, 10. chlet me- chinist for the Oberman Manufectur- ing company, was almost Instantly killed Monday night when his motor car . crashed into a street car in the 1100 bldei on West Atlantic street. He. was attempting to pas an automobile traveling without lights when the ac. cident happened.


Jewell M Windle, coroner, was to- day Investigating.the, accident and at noon icdsv had not decided whether an Inquest would be held.


Mr. Melton, who lived at 1507 West Chestnut street. hed driven a relative to her home and was returning home. According to llenry Laurence, street car motorman. the car driven by Mel- ton approached from the eust, and when It turned to pass the automobile without lights, he saw It would not be able to avoid hitting the street car.


Laurence told officials of the trao- tion company that he stopped the street car before the Melton car lut It. Dr. B. F. Freeman was called to the scene. He said Melton was in- aten !!; Ellled.

Memory of Pioneer Honored At Reunion Of Brutons In City


One hundred members of the Bruton . family attended the annual reunion at Phelps Grove park yes- terday.


The reunion bas been held on July 24 for several years as that was the birthday of : Dr. Jeme Bruton, who dled last August at the age of 98 The members of the family yesterday held the reunion as a imemorial to him. 1


The Reverend Delzell of Marshfield gave the invocation and a basket din- ner was then served. Talka were made"by :Dr. J. W. Bruton of - Spring- field. and the Reverend Delzell. J. W. Scott, superintendent of the 8e- quiota fish hatchery, presided.


The Bruton family pioneered in the settlement of this section. It originally came from France and set- tJed in Williamsburg. Va., in what 18 now known. u Bruton parish. Mem- bers of the family migrated to Ten- nessee. thence to the Ozarks, where the first settlement was at Old Hen- derson, known in the early days as a college town of the Ozarks.


A permanent organization was formed to make arrangements for the memorial reunion each year. This Includes Vic Bruton, Joplin, presi- dent: Mr. Scott, secretary, and Helen Bruton, Joplin, treasurer. Residente of Joplin, Norwood, Marshfield. Fair Grove and Springfield attended yes- terday.

T. Frank Ferguson . . former Springfield resident and widely known here, died in Detroit, Mich., July 11 after an illness of several weeks.

Funeral services for Mre. Martha E'. Ellison. 76., were conducted at the home of her sod. James H. Ellison. Bequiota. et 2:30 o'clock this after- noon. Mrs. Ellison died at her son's home Thursday morning. She le eur- vived by two sone, Mr. Ellison and K. L. Poft of Fort Worth, Texas, and a daughter. Mrs. Florence Rozell of Sparta; and two brothers, L. T. Con- neit of Cedar Creek and Joe Cornett of Oklahoma. Thomas M. Gammen, 71, of Buffalo, died yesterday afternoon at a hospital here following an operation. The body was taken to Buffalo yesterday evening where burial will be made. Funeral arrangementa are Incomplete. Mr. Gammen is survived by his wife, a son, James E. Gammen of Buffalo, and three daughters. Laura Gammen of the home. Mra. C. H. Reagan. Gen- try.
