Myrtle Burris Returns Home, Her Rigid Body Forever Eased Of Pain She Knew For Years


Eleven Years a Bedfast, Immovable Cripple. She Dies Just as Bright Hope Dawns; Sei ices Will Be Held Here Friday


MYRTLE BURRIS will come home to Springfield tomorrow. her long-suffering body more' im- movably qulet even than when she left. Five months ago she left. knowing that she faced months of paln. yet sustained by the bright hope that at the end sho would come back well to take a new place In the moving life from which she had been exiled for 11 years.


Yesterday morning she died in her sunny room -at the Lincoln. Neb., General hospital where she had gone for treatment-died sit- ting, up. after all the years that she 'had lain virtually immovable. For the treatment of her legs and hips had progressed so far that she had been, sitting up daily for sev- eral weeks, and expected soon. 10 be able to walk again, at least .with the ald of crutches.

I ELEVEN HELPLESS YEARS -


As a youngster, Myrtle Burris had worked with her brothers in the cotton flelds of Oklahoma. Her tonsils became infected and dis- ensed. but her family was unable to provide medical care-perhaps did but realize the need.


From the Infection, severe rhou- matlsın resulted. The family moved to Springfield, and here the girl's rheumatisın became so severe that It left both her arms and legs dis- torted and rigid. Her parents now were dead, her two brothers gone to other states.


So for 11 years she lay helpless In a hospital here, her sunny checr. fulness and courage an inspiration 18 scorer of: friends, although sho never moved on her white bed.

She was made particularly happy during her stay in lauten. by as seven weekn' visit from her friend here. Mirs. Edith Ollnger, 607 South Robberson avenue, who was with her constantly. She was also vis- Ited by many Springfieldlans and former Springfieldlans in Lincoln, and by her cheerful courage ninde many friends In the city. When she first went, she was accompanied by her cousin, Mrs. Vera Salsman, 1428 Kingshighway, who stsyed several days until she had formed other friendships there.

Mr. Penn was recovered from a goller operation performed at Mayo brothers in January. The operation was a success and he was thought to be on the road to complete re- covery. Yesterday morning at 4:10 o'clock ho awoke Mrs. Penn gasp. ing and before the phyalcian ar- rived he had died of heart trouble.
