Old Mounds on Drury Campus Hold Secrets Of Primitive People

On the campus of Drury college where now stand the modern build- ings with modern equipment for higher education, are age-old mounds, the primitive abode of mound build- ers.

The mounds were probably the adobe huts of the ancients, homes of a race that has altpped into history and left no record of tte itle. It ta thought that the people were either absorbed Into a more powerful race, such as the indian triben, or were extermi- tc.1 by such a race.

10,000 Mounds In Connly.

Bomne of the mounds which have been investigated ahow remains of charcoal which indicates the ex- Istence of . fire place. This is, how- emer, practically the only thing found to the mounds. There is no trace of srespons, toola or domestic utanalle. Indicating a tribe low in the scale of civilization.

Here where students walk back end forth to clumg, there once walked the Animal-like mon of ages past, men who kindled their fires from flint. killed their food in the forest that stood near the tampun, went to near- by rivera to drink and worried not t all about quises and parties that Dow occupy the minds of the present dwellers. .

There are mid to have been about 10,000 such mounds In Greene county. but they are gradualty being destroy - ed by farmers who plow through tham
