FRISCO'S SPRINGFIELD ENTRY WAS EVENTFUL DAY IN 1870

In order to promote the develop- ment of the route the national For- ernment had made valiable land grante to the company and the state had extended millions of dollars in credit. But there had been much delay In construction. In 1861 the road had extended to Rolls, and from that point onward wagon traina were used for transportaton. After the: Civil war John C. Prmont made An unsuccessful attempt to complete the road, and it then reverted to the : state. The southwest branch was then leased by the Atlantic and Pa- cific Railroad company on August' 17. 1866. a company which had been char- . tered to build a road alop .; the thir- ; ty-fifth parallel of latitude from Springfield to a function with the main line in Indian Territory. It was . under the management of thia coin- pany that the road was completed.
