A PATRIARCH who has founded a family tribe which today includes 187 of his living dear ndents of four generations is John L. Greene, Free- mont, Mo, Carter . inty ploneer who immigrated from Tennessee more than 70 years ago. Mr Greene will be 93 in October. RODE IN COVERED WAGON


Mr. Greene and his young wife. Eveline Durham Greene, and baby daughter, now Mrs. Joseph Ellis, came overland by wagon before the War of Secession. The journey, over inde- scribable roads, took six weeks-to- day it could be made In two days.


He took.a 160-acre .claim in Carter colunty, a claim then occupied by i bears and panthers ,and there he and - his wife made a home in the wilder- ness and reared eight children. By & second marriage to Mrs. Nancy J. Kinnard, there were four more chil- I dren. Of the 12. 11 still are living. He served In Company F. Sixth M!s- sourl Volunteer Cavalry, during the War of Secession, and was wounded at Fredericksburg. He keeps as a trophy a lance given him by a cap- - tured southern doctor.

He was a surveyor as well as farm- many roads west of Van Buren and Current river. He knows the region so Intimately that even today high- way enginees frequently call on him for certain locations.

In 1926, making a good will tour with the Carter county Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Greer.o was Introduced wherever he went as "Kid of the


Ozarks." a living demonstration of what the Ozarks can do for & man. He proved to be one of the livellest of the trippers.


He was the oldest of 6000 citizens attending the dedication of Baker park at Patterson recently, and as such was personally presented to the governor.


Mr. Greene is an "old line" republi- can. And expects to help put Hoover over in November.

The wedding bas been successfully kept scret up to this time, and comea as a total surprise to the friends and relatives of the couple. Mr. Blume will leave tonight for Morenci, Arizo- na, where they plan to make their home, his wife joining him there a short time later. They also plan a honeymoon tour of Mexico after es- tablishing & home In Morencl.

Body of New York Man, For- merly of Springfield, Is Returned For Burial


Short funeral services for Seth Barham, treasurer of the American Radiator company, New York, will be conducted at 4 o'clock today at the Joel H. Rountree home, 445 South Main avenue.


Mr. Barham for several years was superintendent of the Springfield Traction company. He died Wednes- day at New York. Funeral servicea were held there Friday.

The body will arrive in Springfield in a special car at 7 o'clock thia morning. Mrs. Barham and several officiala of the Radiator company are accompanying the body and will at- tend the services here today.


Mr. Barham is a brother of Mrs. Rountree. While in Springfield he was active in civic and social cluba

Promoted to Treasurer'


Lesving Springfield several years ago, Mr. Barham joined the American Radiator company at its offices in Chicago. He later was transferred to the New York office and made treas- urer of the company.

AN OLD-TIME acquaintance of Abraham Lincoln Is Mrs. Eliza Fowler, age 90, who was one of the pioneer residents of Springfield. Mrs. Fowler moved to Springfield from Middletown. III .. early In her life. She lived here until about 10 years ago when she returned to Middle- town.


Her daughter. Mrs. John Harvey at present residing at 1815 North Lyon avenue of this city. Mrs. Fowier la pictured with four


family. The youngest member of this group, Barba Agnew, is four years old.


When Mrs. Fowler resided In this city she often told of Lincoln as she remembered him. "Just an ordinary country boy," was the way she had him classed.


One of her experiences with the Lincoln family was to take a trip overland with them in a covered wagon. This trip was but a short ; one in Illinola as the roads were ID bad shape. ehe said.

Stricken by heart disease, C. L. N. Haines. 55. of Aurora, president of ! the Muskogee Iron Works at Mus- ! kosee. Okla., dropped dead on the street at Aurora yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock.
