STERY DEATHS BELIEVED CAUSED BY OZARKS FIEND

Father of . Boy Brought to Springfield Hospital Tells of Threats Against Family in Texas County

PHYSICIAN PUZZLED OVER STRANGE MALADY

Officers Believe Mercurial

Poisoning Responsible;

Mother. Daughter and Granddaughter Are Dead

AN OZARK feud of long standing was responsible for the myster- joua death of his wife. mother-in-law and sister-in-law. near Cabool. ac- cording to Cecil J. Weatherman.

Weatherman. an employe at the union station in Kansas City, is in Springfield at the bedaide of hia 3- year-old son. Cecil. who went with his mother and brother Robert. 2, to the home of Mrs. Weatherman's mother. Mrs. Joseph McGebee. Cabool. for a visit, sereral weeks ago.

1 BOY NEAR DEATH -

+

Mrs. Weatherman. 17. died August 6 at ber! mother's home. Mrs. Mc- Ochce, died the .preceding day and a 9-year-old sister of Mra. Weatherman, Nancy Louise, died August 3.When Cell Weatherman became m be vas brought to Burgo hospital bert, where it wastuld last night ha probably would die.

The pbydlelan who attended the family had diagnosed the cases as typhoid fever. But death. he Fald, had come with .unusual rapidity.

Raymond Corbett, prosecuting at- torney of Texas county, sent the Visceras of Mrs. Weatherman and Mrs. ! McGebre to a Springfield hospital for analysis.

BOY BROUGHT HERE

+ Cecil Weatherman. Jr. three-year- old son of Art. Weatherman, was taken to the Burge hospital suffering from the same malady that took the

lives of the three women.

Texas ouenty officera and physi- clans of Cabool have been working on the case since the death of Mrs. Weatherman, when members of the family. appalled at the number of deaths. and the illness of the child. feared foul play.

t Physicians treating the child at Springfield, reported to Cabool auth- orities that they were baffled as to the cause for the illness, and declared that the affair was the most puzzling ever experienced:by them. . ..

ILL FIVE DAYS

Each of the three dead died after lineas of from five to seren days. and at no time appeared. to be vi- ciently ill. but to fade away.

spr.la pysciana, and the physician wto treated the others in their illness, said that the iliness acted similar to that of persons stricken with mercurial poisoning.

Physiciana are in a quaudry as to what polson could have been used. ! as the deaths of the three women were slow. and not acute and sudden . as death by most poisoning.

Drinking water on the McGee farm, which other members of the family have been drinking without Lil effecta, has been tested and found puro.

McGee said today that he wus puzzled as to the cause of the deatha. He said that as far as he knew. no one other than the family. had been around the home, which is three miles west of Cabool.

J. P. Caballer. the attending physi- clanthere was reluctant in. discussing the case. charging that publicity would injure his investigation.

PHYSICIANS PUZZLED --

Physicians attending Cecil Weath- erman, who is at Burge hospital here near death, suffering from the mys- tertous malady which killed his cousin, mother and grandmother. de- clared last night that they were no nearer a solution of the case !!_ n they were when he first was brought to the hospital ..

Minute check on the reactions of the child, as well as analyste of his blood, has been made.

if the child dies physicians here will make an autopsy of his stomach in an effort to find if polson caused death. The child lies semi-conscious and' listless, and seems to be slowly expiring. No pain seems to be ex- perienced, his physicians sald.

630

(The child's father. C. J. Weather- man, remains at his 'bedside. Le is of the opinion that the death of bis wife and her relatives, were caused by_ poisoning .......

Weatherman. with his wife and two sc all children. went to Cabool three weeks ago for a riait with his wife's relatives. Mr. Weatherman snid last night. His wife took alck a few days after their arrival.

Physicians are .puzzling over the fact that. with exception of the amall child, the three who died all were women.

Weatherman's second child Is at lhe McGee home at Cabool. Reports that his child, and two McGee chil- dren were lil from the same malady. were erroneous, he said.
