An old-timer stood in front of the Landers building. He said he recalled' that in 1859 John Ochmook, father of John Ochmook II, was one day .on that same spot with @ hand bag on his back meditating whether he should cast his lot with Springfield or walk to Yellville and go into the business of making furniture by band. He said he had reason to be- lleve Yelivite would be the large city In this section. He decided to remain In Springfield and was one of the men who helped make a large city here. He guessed right as to where the large city would be. He became a miller and was the founder of the Meyer mill at Boonville and Phelps. He built the Central hotel and for many years wes an activa. energetic, enterprising citizen. He bought prop- erty on the square: at Walnut and Campbell and on Boonville. How- jever. hia rision did not hold up in all cases. When Le died 30 years ago bis will directed that the property on the square and at Walnut i
and Campbell be sold. which { it was. He evidently bellevedi in . Boonville,m street 'as; all per- sons did." However, "the property he sold has · advanced in value rapidly while the Boonville avenue property did . little. In the days of John Schmook, Boonville was not only the best business street in town, but the -
best residence street. The fine old mansions on Boonville avenue have long ago been abandoned by the original families; some stand Mosas and's wreck. Some have been con- verted tifto business houses. How- ever." Boonville is now slowly under- going another change. It has been picking up as a business street for several years and in time should be a solld mess of business houses from one end of the avenue to the other. With algna of this kind clearly ap- penring is It possible to stop the morement by a radical advance in real estate values? It has been said that very thing prevented Boonville from coming into Its own a quarter of a century Ago.
