BODY IS FOUND NEAR GOODMAN


McDonald County Authorities Probe Death of Unidenti- fied Man."


GOODMAN, Mo., April 6 .- (A. P.)- With the head crushed and other In- dications of a brutal murder, the body of an unidentified man was found in a culvert a mlle and a half south of Goodman, on Highway No. 71, today. The man appeared to have been be- tween 40 and 45 years of age.


The body was discovered by Dr. W. W. Frazier, who lives nearby. He saw feet protruding from the culvert and upon investigating, found the body wedged loto the drain. The body ap- parently had been there several days.


The head was badly crushed. aa though beaten with a hammer. and there were bruises on the handa. in- dicating they may have been IDIlleted when the man endeavored to ward off the hammer blowa.


There were no Indications of a struggle and authorities are conduct- Ing their investigation on the theory that the man was killed At some other place and the body taken to the cul- vert where It wan found.

William Gregory. 64-year-old farm- or living als miles northeast of Thay- or. No., Is being held in the Oregon county jail In connection with the fatal shooting Thursday evening of Willie Brenner, 34 years old. Coroner Loo Carr said today.

Brenner's horse and a few minutes later were met by the young farmert dog. A short distance' farther and the body of Brenner was, found. : lying in a pool of blood. Examination re- waled that a gaping wound had been tora in the man's right aide.

Gregory was taken to the county jati and a coroner's jury wan called by Coroner Carr. After examining sev- eral witnessen, the Jury returned a verdict involving William Gregory.


Witnesses before the jury testified that Gregory hatl made numerous threats against Brenner an a result of an alleged feud which was sald to be the dutgrowth of action years ago by Brenner, who helped Gregory's fourth wila to leave Gregory and re- turn to her parents in Arkansas

Failure to establish the Identity of a well-dressed and prosperous ap- pearing young man, whose mutilated body was found early yesterday con- cealed in a culvert on Highway 71.'A short distance south of Goodman. 65 i miles southwest of here, has led Bher- - If[ L. The body of the murdered man wea found by Dr. W. W. Frazier, who Itvea hear the culvert. He saw the feet of ja Inan protruding from the culvert. Investigation disclosed the body wedged Into the drain.': It apparently bad been there 'several days. The head was badly crushed, as though beaten with & hammer, and there were bruises on 'the hands, Indicating they may have been Inflicted when the man endeavored to ward off the hammer blowa.


There ' were no Indications - of struggle and authorities are conduct- ing their Investigation on .the theory that. the man was killed at some other place and the body taken to the culvert and concealed.


When Yound. the body was cost- less, but clothed In dark gray trousera and blue striped shirt, both of good quality. The shirt appeared to have been made to order and bore the trademark of the Nelson Shirt com- pany of Lincoln. Neb. A laundry mark. "J. F. S." Is one of the clues through which authorities hope to es- tablish the identity of the man.


Another clue la a 21-jewel Illinola- Buun special watch found on the body. together with two pocket kniven, one of which was Attached to the watch by a chain. The watch Is of the type used by raltrond men.
