Nobody's Business But Dad's and Mine,' Boy Gasps in Hospital; Man' Expires in Ambulance


Special to The News" THAYER, Mo., 'June 15 .--- Love rivalry . between father and son flamed into a gun duel in an isolated wood-+ ed pasture near here early to- day and caused the death of James Perkins; 43, tnd his 23- year-old son, Frank.


"The men. who a short time before the duel quarreled over attentions paid to a woman friend. left the home of a friend with whom they had been visiting and went to the woods to settle the disagreement.


The duel was staged in a heavily wooded pasture near the home of R. J. Crews. a farmer, living 13 miley southwest of Thayer.

had been paying attention to a young woman of the neighborhood. .


"The argument came about erer a woman, whose name I cannot rt- veal, but to which both of the men had been paying considerable atten- tion," Constable McCourtney said.


FRIEND HEARS SHOTS


Several neighbors had been visiting at the Crews home. They left about midnight. Perkins and his son were the last to leave.


As they left the yard they began to argue about the attentions of a young woman in the neighborhood. They walked Into the woods.


Shortly before 2 o'clock Mr. Oreus said he heard abots. He ran into the wooded pasture. He found the' elder Perkins unconscious, a bullet through one eye, another wound in the back of the head, and a third in the chest. They were made by & 45 calibre pistol

Perkins is survived by his wife and four daughters. His son was not mary ried.


Coroner Carr said last night that an inquest would be held here todex The weapons used by the men were found near their bodies.


Before the death of the youth he | was questioned as to the motive fox the shooting. 1

West Plains Boy. Dies on Way To Hospital Here After Fall- ing Under Freight

Crushed under a rapidly moving freight train near St. James late Tuesday night, Roy Arnold, 18-year- old son of a prominent West Plains business man, died aboard a Frisco passenger train as it was nearing 'Springfield early yesterday morning.

Arnold, with Lower Riley, 18. of West Plains, were-"bumming" their way to St. Louis where they hoped to find employment during the summer. Thrown Under Train


Attempting to swing to the opposite ade of an oil tank car, Arnold lost his balance and was thrown beneath the train.


His right arm was severed near the shoulder and he suffered a fractured akull. Riley notified the station agent at St. James, a short distance from where the accident occured, and ac- companied by a group of men, Arnold was found, still alive, on the tracks. was placed sboard passenger train No. 105, bound for Springfield. and. the train crew was ordered to make full speed ahead. . Physicians Bald if he could be brought to a hos- pital here and an operation performed that he would stand a chance for recovery.

Young Arnold was the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Arnold, prominent Weat Plains residents. The youths left West Plains Wednesday morning and came to Springfield. They left here Thursday afternoon on a freight for 8t. Loula.
