The Waste Basket .... inte Which Are Often Tossed Scraps Went ., Worth While

John Welles, former county Turvayor, Je" been laid up for several months with sick. nese ,although he is able to get around some. While taking the rest cure he has been think- Ing oret the drainera problem of the city. 'which has never been adjusted for a definite decision madeas to just what has made surface Water to much worse in Springfield in the last 10 years. Especially is this-true-of the south- east part of the city where Mr. McAfee re- aides. Mr. AcAfee stated the other day he had noticed a recent reference to the old Bo- denheimer spring at Cherry and Kimbrough. He said years ago the spring was in a depres- slon, probably 20 feet. This depression took care of a vast amount of water which collect- ed from acres that sloped toward the spring. The apring carried off water as well as suppli- ed it. There were other apringe in the south- east part of town which did the same thing. When a boy. Mr. McAlea said he recalled a plank might be put into the underground apring near Teachers college and It would come out of another spring several milen southeast of the city. The former county surveyor aaye it has been known always that a large part of Springtiald is over a cave which makes an underground lake. Before the dey had grown there was connection boa .. tween the surface'and the lake or cave,' The natural mapholes carried the surplus of wa- ter to the cave and then it flowed to the creeks.

Mr. McAlle sald all one had lo- do to un- derstand what changed conditions meant was to take a look at the section of the city around the old Bodenheimer, apring which has been long filled up .. In the old days the spring carried off the water rapidly. Now flood conditions prevail around Phelps school when a big rain falle; 3;It. is Impossible to cross the atreet when rain fa under way, Mr. McAlee thinka much trouble could be: avold- ed and money saved if some plan were devis- ed whereby the old natural drainage system was restored., Much of the water could be turned Into the lake as of old, he believes, and- a large sum of money saved la construction. He admits hia Idea would not be very popular as It acems behind the times and would not furnish enough contract work.

E. J. Bourquenot has given the waterway under Springfield much thought. Ho Is one of the ploneers of the city and was The original candy manufacturer here. Mr. Bourquenot resides at 714 South Dollison and the natural underground waterway or cave runs through his section of the city. He says at night when there is a sharp clap of thunder he. can place tils "ar"to"tab"prow thid'-beer the' forations. In the underground passage for several seconda after they have died out in the air. 'Mr. Bours' quenot thinks the cave meanders around like a creek.

One of the connected waterways had a head or spring In Ellle grove in the southeast part of the city. Chips put in this spring, which showed a suction, would come out at Boden- helmer spring at Kimbrough and Cherry street. Tha waterway goes northeast from this point. passes through the old Bray. property on Esat Walnut and used to come out in a large spring on *: Water street, ; about where the Milligan Grocer company is now located. Mr. Bourque- not aays the Water street spring was the best of all the springs around here and furnished water for street sprinkling for many years. The waterway scema to go from Water street to a apring near the old Gulf shops In the west part of the city. Chips thrown Into the Water street spring would come out at the Fulbright spring In the west part of the city.

. .

In the early days of Springfield's water sup- ply there were many wells In the city. The well was the common source of water for all familles. H. F. Denton had a contract to sprinkle the streets. He needed a large water suty:ly and decided to dig a deep well at College and Campbell. This is on top of a hill as one may now observe. It was thought to be a perullar place to dig a well. It was a deep Tot ind much drilltog was done A pump with" windmill bower: was tifst tried but the build- Mings shut off the air and the mill would not work. Then a steam engine was substituted and water was plentiful. Soon many wells in the vicinity went dry. " The deep well used up. all the water for blocks around.

When Mr. Bourquenot started in the candy manufacturing hustness half a century ago it was predicted by businessman he could not make a success as Springfield did not eat much candy. The town was small and poor and had not de- veloped a sweet tooth. It was soon shown that Springfield liked candy and the business be- came à success. Mr. Bourquenot retired many years ago.
