Springfield, had one Civil war execution. Lieutenant Brownlee faced a firing squad in this city. He was in the Confederate service and was charged with bushwhacking, spying. borse stealing and other crimes. He was trled by a court martial and condemned to desth. Before the sentence was executed the war came to e close, but Springfield was atill under mill- tary law and so remained for sometime. There was an appeal made for Brownlee on the ground that as the war was over a soldier should not be executed on orders of a court martial. Gen. Sanburn, In command of the city. declared Brownlee was not beld aa a apy or soldler, but as a thiel, murderer and law violator and ordered sentence carried out. This was done and was a subject of warm - debate for years after.
