WHEN "Uncic" Thomas Carney "was asked by 's "frlend for a badly needed loan he didn't require & #igned note or any form of se- curity. A man's word was good enough for all that.

"Uncle" Joe Overstreet of near Crane, a pioneer of that community and a Descendant of the Carney family, was master of ceremonies. He was alded by Judge Charles L. Henson of Mount Vernon, who re- called many incidente told to him about the"early days of that sec-

tion of the Ozarks.

Descendants and friends of the Carney family came to the cele- bration from many states to join In the fete. Traveling the farthest were Mr. and Mrs. Linn Carney of San Francisco, and Mr. and Mra. Elijah Luster of Los Angeles.

Henry Carney. an old settler of that section, now of Cape Pair. Mo .. wu present. He has not been able to hear a word spoken since the battle of Wilson Creek. Mr. Carney. then a boy, heard the cannon and flring of other guns on this me- morable day. The roaring caused deafness.

The house at 1307 Benton avenue was the home of one of the McElhanys. Later it was owned by O. K. Armstrong and when it was torn down he used much of the material -- walnut doors and such -- in his new house out south. I'm not sure about 848 Benton avenue. Maybe it was the W. C. Calland home. William O. Oldham lived at 858 Benton avenue. The big house at 999 Benton avenue was later cut in two and became two residences.]
