Mins Virginia Bayers. 85. ploneer resident of Greene county, died at 7:30 | L. m. today. at the family home, six millee northwest of Rogersville, after a brief Illness.


Miss Bayers spent her entire life at the family homestead. Bhe was born Feb. 14, 1842.


Although funeral arrangements had not been completed today. Interment alil be made in the Bayers home- stead cemetery.


The deceased-la survived by one brother. A. V. Bayers, and three alstera. Miss Suannah Bayers, Mra. Margaret Alexander and Mrs. Sidney Caldwell, all of the family home.

After several years with" too Big Four, Santa Fe, and. Denver and Fort Worth :railways, he joined; the Frico in ' 1918 as & transportation clerk! with headquarters in St. Louis.


Then in. rapid succession came hfa promotions to transportation Inspec- |tor. superintendent of the eastern di- vision of the Frisco, and on February 1. 1926. he was made assistant gen- eral manager.


His promotion to general manager of the large rail property was made on February 18, 1926. exactly one year and 18 days later.

Clark Hall, 77, founder and pred- dent of the Bank of Thayer since Its organization at Thayer in 1889 - and who began his career as a newsboy on' the old Iron Mountain, died at bis bome in Thayer following a lingering


Born In Columbus, Ohio, in 1850. Mr. Hall came to southern Missouri when 14 years old and went to work for a news agency, running between St. Louis and southeast Missouri, He continued railroading. finally being named conductor of the route he lind estved as newsboy. -


He wes named a conductor on the ald Kansas City. Fort Boott & Mem- phis line, running to Memphis.


In 1890 he moved to Thayer and. organized the Bank of Thayer and continued in the capacity of president of the institution until 1918 when he retired on account of advanced age. In 1912 he erected the Thayer Ice & Cold Storage plant and operated the concern until 1928 when he sold It to the citizens of Thayer us a municipal project.

West Plains will soon lose one of Its most Interesting citizens, who was there In 1862 as a Union" soldier. and 60 years later cama back to be- come a resident of Howell county. W. L. Emily. for the past five years a citizen there. and Mrs. Emily will leave shortly for Wiggins, Colo., to make their home with & son.


When a lad of 16 years, Mr. Emily Joined the Eleventh Wisconsin Infan- try and marched off to war. The winter of 1863 found him in West Plaina, . where General Davidson camped around the town spring with 10,000 troope. He had marched here from Pilot Knob to clear the country of bushwhackers, of which he found very few.


The march from Pilot Knob was full of Incidents, especially when : Cieneral Davidson was forced on sev- cral occasions to the ropes in his can- - nona and 100 men would pull theo : over the hills and mountains, where six Porsca falledi.
