Miss Nelle Kump received in an Afternoon trock of thell pink chiffon and Inca. Miss Katherine Kump wore a trock of flowered chiffon. They were assisted in entertaining by Miss Betty Ann Rountree, who wore a green chif- fon dries. The guest of honor wore a striking black and white cape cos- tume.

Contrell, 1875 North Grant avenue, and Mr. Ralph Crooks, BOD of Mrs. Lillie Crooks, 1010 West Walnut street, took place at St. John's Epis- copal church Thursday evening at 8 o'clock. July 26. ' The Reverend Lewis R. Anschutz read the ceremony. Only Immediate members of both familles were present.


Mr. and Mrs. Crooks left immedi- ately for a short wedding trip. On their return they will be at home at 1875 North Grant avenue. Mrs. Crooks is well known in this .: 5. VACATION FROLIC ENDS IN TRAGEDY AS MAN DROWNED


Young Kansas Cityan Parthey In Swimming Hole'. Noar Stockton; Body Recovered After Long Search


ALFRED CREDDEN, 22-year-old Kansas Cityan, was drowned yes- tenday afternoon at 2 o'clock while swimming 10 Bac river near Stockton. northwest of Springfield. His body was found two hours later in 15 feet of water. : Credden, who was on his annual racation with Mr. and Mrs. Robert Forarch. Elton Treston and' Miss Eva Berry. all of Kansas City. went to swimming about 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon near the old Brown Bridge over Sac river. two miles northeast of Stockton.

Members of the group beard Credden cry for help as he was seen unking in the deep water. He was never seen again until the body wu recovered two hours later with grab books.

The marriage of Miss Alice West, daughter of the Reverend 'and Mrs. Frank B. West. 310 Ellt Central istreet, to Mr. August Dellnek, of Clinton. "Okla .. ' took place at the home of the bride's parents Friday evening. The single ring ceremony was read by, the father of the bride.


The bride wore a dressyof almond brown crepe Romaine. Her bouquet was of Ophelli. rose buds and baby breath. Bei. e the ceremony Miss Pauline Bryant. accompanied by Miss Catherine Call, sang "I Love You Truly." Lohengrin's wedding march was played by -. Miss Opal Biler. . Special Dispatch to The Kert. ROLLA, Mo. July 29-Dan Mer- rell, 25-year-old farm hand, is in Phelps county jail here tonight facing charges of first degree mur- der in connection with the killing of Ames Porter, widely known Polla stockman.


Porter died shortly after a fight with Merrell when the two quarreled Over a difference of 25 cents in Mer-


rell's pay check.


- DEATH OVER 25 CENTS -


Mr. Porter had gone to his farm. near here to pa. a number of men who had been harvesting his bay crop. He paid each of the med 12.75


stockman wrote but Merrell 1;check for $2.75. Merrell Insisted that he be paid #3. : ». .-


When Mr. Porter refused to pay the additional 25 centa, declaring that it would be unfair to pay Mer- rell more than be paid the other emploes, Merre'! told Mr. Porter that he would give him a "good thresh- ing" and let it go.


Employes told John A. Watson. Phelps county prosecuting attorney. | that Merrell knocked Mr. Porter to the ground ani then shoved ' his knees in his chest.


FLEES AFTER SLAYING


By this time other employes had come to Porter's rescue, and Merrell turned and ran. One of the men started to lift Mr. Porter from the ground. but found he was dying.


Merrell told officers he did not know that he had killed 'Porter until his arrest.


Mr. Watson filed charges of first degree murder in the justice court of W. J. Salts. When Merrell was ar- raigned. Judge Salts set his prelim- inary hearing for August 10. and or- dered him held in the Phelps county Jail without bord.


KNOWN FOR TEMPER


Prosecutor Watson said he did not know if Merrell had a criminal rec- ord, but that he was known over the countryalde as a quarrelsome > and hightempered person.

Mri. Caroline F. Grow, 91, national- ly known journalist, died here yes- terday at the home of her niece, Mise Alice ; L. Thrasher, 865 Benton ave- nue, with whom she has made""her home 'since November.


Mre. Grow was for years editor of the Elite Newa of Chicago and later business manager of the" Arkansas Traveler. 8ha also acted as business manager of the W. C. T. U. publish- ing association. She was a graduate of Wheaton college, Norton, Miss .. and was associate principal of Stan- ford Female seminary at one time.


She was a atrong advocate of wom- an suffrage and prohibition and took an active part In all feminist move- ments.


Mra. Grow came to Springfield from Chicago, where she had lived since be. fore the days of the Chicago fire, Bhe. was accompanied here by her daugh- ter. Miss Windsor Grow. She was widow of David Richardson Grow of Chicago. :


The body will be forwarded tomor- row night; under direction of the Alma Lohmeyer Funeral home to Providence; R. I., where burial will be made.


Mrs. Grow is survived by her daughter, Miss Grow: & brother. E. O. Windsor of Providence; & niece. Miss Thrasher; two grandsons and one great grandson. .

James O. Henry, 82, pioneer rest- dent of Howell county, filed Tuesday afternoon 'following & 'lingering 111- ness at his home, near Teresita, Mo. Mr. Henry' came from Tennesse to Howell county In 1657 and had aince I made his home in that district. He le survived by one stater, Mrs. O. N. Bernett, of West"Plains; one brother. Tom Henry of Peace Valley, and aev- eral children. Mr. Henry wan well known in West Plains, where he was a frequent visitor. .

. Two hundred members of the Yen- der .famlly are afpected ta attila a rrunion to be held Sunday at Yender Castle near Brighton, Mo.


The reunion, which is an ennbal affair, In a memorial to Christan Fen- der, founder of the family, who came to the Cracks from North Carolina 92 years ago. Several states will" be represented in the gathering which last year attracted 150 descendante of Mr. Fender.
