4. William Laurence, b. 11 June, 1761. In April, 1276, a student at Yale Coll., as we learn from a letter from Mr. Neh. Strong. one of the Faculty. which speaks of Rev. Mr. Perry's return from the army, and comments highly on the character and progress in study of this son. then in college. Fragments of a correspondence with Gov. Wm Franklin, the Royalist Governor of New Jersey (one dated 22 Mch., 1781), enables ns to piece out young Perry's history. It came to the Governor's knowledge, about Feb. 23 of that year, that the young man who had been captured on a privateer was then a prisoner on the Hospital Ship, in the Wallabout, Long Island. He found him to be in a very weak and emaciated condition, and, as the fact« proved, was just succumbing to the infec- tions disorder to which the prison-ship inmates were subject. Hle was at first brought to the Gov'r's house in N. Y. city; but, as he grew worse and needed more constant attention than could there be given him, the Gov. procured for him the attendance of a careful nurse, and provided the best medical advice, diet, etc., which could Ix obtained, rather than allow him to be sent to the hospital. "I am sorry," writes the Gov. lo Mr. Perry, " the expense has been so great, as ] imagine you cannot very well afford it in these Times of Difficulty: but I am convinced that he ronld not have recovered had he continued on hoard the Hospital Ship, and had he been removed to a Private Lodging House, the Expense would have been enormous and most probably he would not have met with the necessary Attention. One woman, to whom the offer was made, tho' very

poor herself, declared she would not take him in for 100 Guineas, having once suffered greatly from nursing a Person in that Disorder." The nurse, also, whom the Gov. procured for him, was n poor fellow whose discharge from prison he had seenred and who undertook it as an act of grati- tude. Laurence finally recovered, and the father ( Mch. 26th) received a letter from Selleck S. Silli- man at Fairfield, Coun., informing him that his son had arrived at his house, on parole, under a lag which brought him " into the harbor, a little before Night." and went for him and brought him home to E. W. An exchange was afterwards ar- ranged for him, through the influence of Governor Franklin. The expense of going for Laurence to ship and bringing him to N. Y. and clothing, paid by the Governor, was $5, 13%, 04, N. Y. money. The Governor, it will be seen from p. 660. Vol. I. had been a prisoner of war at E. W., In 1276, and had become acquainted with Rev. Mr. Perry, and family. William Laurence Perry d. 1 Sept., 1781. F. W. Ch. Serton's Fire.

PHELPS. (Phyllypes) -- the superfluous letters in the name were dropped during the reign of Edward VI. [This revision prepared by Miss RUTH T. SPERRY of E. W. Hill, who acknowledges aid received from MIS. of A. T. SERVIN of Lenox, Mass., and MS, prepared by the late OLIVER S. PHELes of Portland, Ore. ]

The following farts concerning the family in England are gleaned from letters addressed to O. S. Phelps, by Mr. William Phelps Prior, himself a native of Tew kesbury, Gloucestershire, Eng., whence the ancestors of the American Phelpses emigrated. At his request, the church register of Tewkesbury was searched by J. Morgan of T., with the following results:

William, son of James, bp. 4 Aug., 1560.

Wil.MAM, son of William, bp. 19 Aug., 1599. Mary, daughter of William, bp. + Sept., 1587. Dorothy, daughter of William, bp. 28 Feb., 1595. James, son of William, hp. 14 July, 1601. Elizabeth, daughter of William, bp. 9 May, 1603. [George, b. about 1605.] RICHARD, Son of William, bp. 26 Dec., 1619.

* This being so esensively a Simsbury family, we have only given the ad gen. of the two eld, sans who were b. in Windsor. The Humphrey Family to neat, contains much Pettibone matter.

THE PHELPS FAMILY.

Some of the carliest registers were absolutely mouldy, written in almost illegi- ble old English, with here and there part of a page wanting. A leaf is lost contain- ing records of the yr. 1582 and a part of 1583; the year 1591 is so defaced by damp as not to be legible. It follows, that even at the date of the first records, the Phelpses were numerons at T., and that many may have been baptized elsewhere. The first P. name is that of James, b. prob. abt, 1520. In the parish register of T. during Lent, 1590, occurs this entry: " I graunted a license to William Phelps, being then extremelye sicke, to eat fleshe, which license to endure no longer tyme than during his sickness. Ri: CURTEIS, curate of Tewkxburie."- Bennett's Hist. Tewksbury, p. 184.

The first-named William in the above record of baptisms, and to whom the Lenten license was granted in 1590, was Mayor, or rather Bailiff of T. in 1607, and prob. the father of the emigrant Phelps bro's. EDWARD PHELPS, Bailiff of T. 1629, appears to have been the eldest son of William. Another EDWARD PHELPS was Bailitl' of T. in 1655, 1664, and 1623, at which latter date he had good estates in the . neighborhood, including entailed ppy. at Twining and Tewkesbury. Jons PHELr's who, with Andrew Boughton, was clerk of the court which condemned Charles I, in 1649, is said to have been a desc. of William of T. His likeness is in Hallem's Report of the Trial, a print of 1684. He died in exile .*
