Eliphalet Eno gave land for a burial ground in Torrington, and upon his tomb- stone are the following lines :

" Here lies the worthy. generous man Who gave the ground on which we stand; Ile gave it for the use of all Who are interred within this wall."

We understand that the Eno family of Windsor owned land both in Torrington and in Colebrook as original proprietors, and, for a time at least, these lands were run in connection with the Windsor farm.

They drove cattle out to Torrington for the summer, and back to Windsor to winter. "Aunt Eunice Eno" used to come out to Torrington on horseback and knit stockings while riding out and back. Once they were ready to go from Tor. to Windsor with a cart and oxen with a load. One ox was disabled, and " Unele Ashbel " put a horse in with the other ox, and made the trip safely. Eliphalet Eno saw (when a boy) a man bring home to Windsor in bis pocket two potatoes, from New Haven or elsewhere, saying to his wife: "They say these potatoes, when roasted, are as good as an egg." The potatoes were planted in the garden, and Mr. Eno saw them harvested in the fall, nearly half a bushel, probably the first potatoes raised in Windsor.

When a young man, Eliphalet Eno went down the river in his own boat, after salt for himself, and to do errands for his neighbors. On the way home his boat swamped and all the cargo was lost. Mr. Eno said, "I was poorer than any man 1 know, for my own property was gone, and I had no money to pay my neighbors for what they had entrusted to me." Mrs. Pardee has her grandfather's silver stock buckle and knee-buckles. - Letter of B. W. Pettibone of Winsted, Conn.] Ch. : 1. Eunice, b. 23 Nov., 1794; m. I May, 1813, Abiel Taylor of Tor. GENEALOGIES AND BIOGRAPHIES OF ANCIENT WINDSOR.

FAM. 15. Roger4 (Maj .- Gen.) (Darid,“ Jas.," Jax.1), b. Simsbury, 1729; d. Colchester, Proger Tomat Conn., 6 Oct., 1808. Al- ways spelled his name " Enos." He m., Wind sor, 10 Mch., 1763, Jeru- sha (dau. of Daniel and Esther Moore) Hayden of W .; she was b. W., 23 Nov., 1739; d. Irasburg,

Vermont, 20 Mch., 1830. General Enos was highly educated, handsome in appearance, and a man of more than ordinary ability. He entered the military service of Connecticut, 1759, his name heads the list of volunteers from Windsor for the Canada campaign of 1759-60. The Conn. Assembly successively pro- moted him for services in the field, as follows: Ens, of 1st Co., Col. Phineas Ly- man's Reg., Mch., 1660, Lient, of same Co, at Montreal, Canada, Sept., 1560; Adj't of the Reg't, 1761, during which year he also acted as Capt .- Lient. of 1st Co .; Ist Lient, of same Co., 1762; Capt. of 5th Co., Col. Israel Putnam's Reg't. 1764, in ex- pedition against Indians. He accompanied his command in exped. against Havana. 1762. In 1973 he was app. on a commission composed of Cols. Israel and Rufus Putnam, Phineas Lyman, and himself, to survey the lands in the Mississippi Valley granted by the Crown to the provincial troops engaged in the French war and the Havana campaign, and from which resulted the colony settled at Natchez, Miss .. by Col. Lyman. In 1775 he entered the Continental Army as Lieut .- Col. of the 22d Reg'i in Arnold's Exped. to Canada; returned from that exped. with his command, 25 Oct., 1735, and on 1 Dec., 1775, was tried by court-martial on the charge of "quitting his commanding officer without leave," and was " honorably acquitted," his return being a necessity to preserve his troops from starvation. The circum- stances of this case are forcibly stated in the admirable defense of Enos's conduct, made by Rev. Horace Edwin Hayden of Wilkesbarre, Pa., in an article entitled, "Gen. Roger Enos; A Lost Chapter of Arnold's Expedition to Canada, 1775," pub. in the May (1885) number of the Magazine of Inwerican History.

Resigning his commission (as then Lient .- Col. of 16th Conn. Regt.) 18 .Jan., 1776, we find him, in May, 1677, serving on a committee of Windsor citizens to secure a bounty of £30 to each man who should enlist in the Continental service. He after- wards commanded one of the regiments thous raised and stationed in the S. W. cor. of the State. Late in 1779 he left the Conn. service and rem. to Vermont, where, with others, he settled the town of Enosburg, March, 1750. In 1981 he was appointed Brig. Gen., and placed in command of all the Vermont troops then in service. In 1787 he was elected Maj .- Gen. of Ist Division of the State of Vermont. which position he held until 1791, when he resigned, having been for over thirty years almost continuously in the military service of his country ..

From 1781 to 1792 he was a member of the Vermont Board of War, of the State Assembly, of the House Committee to settle the N. H. and Vt. controversy, and a Trustee of the University of Vermont, elected by the Assembly; also one of the House Committee to consider the Vermont resolutions passed by the Continental Congress. From his entrance into the State in 19 until 1792 he was one of the most prominent actors and most honored figures in the history of Vermont, where none ever doubted his loyalty to the United Colonies, his military ability, or his moral courage. In 1792, at the age of 63, worn out with long and active service. he resigned all publie offices, and retired to Colchester, Vt., where he passed his remaining days with his daughter, Mrs. Gen. Ira Allen. He died 15 Oct., 1808, 1. 79, and was buried at Burlington, Vt., in the same plot as Ethan Allen and Ira Al- len, the latter of whom married one of Roger Eno's daughters. C'h. (bp. I. C.
