Windsor, Coun., received a common school education in his native village, and removed to Detroit about 1827, where he was employed in the warehouse of his relative, the late Oliver Newberry. About two years after he removed to Rochester, engaged at once in mercantile pursuits, and accumulated a large fortune for that section of the country, and retired from active business some thirty years ago. He was a member of the first and second State conventions called for the purpose of forming a constitution for the State, and also a senator from Oakland County for two terms in the State legislature. He was always a strong Democrat in politics. In his business relations he was known as a man of strict integrity, a kind and obliging neighbor, and courteous, exemplary, and honorable in all the relations of life. llis four sons - Seneca Newberry, Jr., George, Homer, and Oliver, are all con- nected with the Shiawassee Paper Company, doing business in Detroit. - Detroit Pust. the exploration of Northern California and Oregon, in which the next six years were spent (see his report, pub. by U. S. 1857); afterwards appointed to similar service in the Ives Expedition to Southern California, New Mexico, etc. (see report). In 1861 he was appointed Secretary of the Western Department U. S. Sanitary Commission (see his book, The Sanitary Commission in the Mississippi Valley); was appointed Professor of Geology and Paleontology in the School of Mines, Colum- bia College, N. Y. City, in 1866, which chair he still retains, his services being recognized by his appointment, 1878, to the same professorship in Columbia College itself, the remarkable paleontological collection of that college being almost entirely his work. In 1869 he was appointed Chief of the Ohio State Geological Survey. - See Report. He was Pres. of the N. Y. His native energy forced him to oth- er fields and more active pursuits. As president of the Michigan Car Co., he at- tained a fine fortune; he was a large owner of railroads and lands in Northern Mich .; represented his district in the U. S. Congress of 1871, and was emphatically a most useful citizen. He was a liberal supporter of all public enterprises in Detroit, and d. 11 Jan., 1886, leaving an estate estimated at about $18,000,000. To the Detroit Art Museum he gave $10,000, and, with another citizen, $100,000 for the establish- ment in that city of a free Homeopathic Hospital. He married (1) Harriet Newell Robinson, who d. 11 Sept., 1856; (2) Helen Pamela (dau. Truman Parmele and Harriet Newcomb Hall) Handy, h. Cleveland, Ohio, 15 Nov., 1835. Children (b. Walker's filibustering expedition to Sonora, in 1852-3; was wounded and abandoned; found his way to a U. S. fort on the frontier, and after recovery became a guide through that country. Returning to the States in 1855, he engaged as civil engineer in the construction of the Hannibal & St. Joseph R. R., from 1855 to 1859. At the beginning of the Civil War of 1861, he joined the Union forces of Missouri; was captured at Springfield with Gen. Lyon; escaped; raised a company of L'nionists, joining the 24th Mo. Vols. then in U. S. service; was severely wounded at Shiloh; was promoted to the 5th Mo. Cavalry as major; discharged in 1865, after

FAM. 52. Walter Cass ' (Gen.) (Almasa S.,7 Amusa,6 Benj.,5 Joseph,4 Thos.,3 Benj.,2 Thos.1), b. Sangerfield, N. Y., 23 Dec., 1835; received an academic edueation; was raised upon a farm; entered commercial business with his father at seventeen years of age, and at 21 succeeded to his father's business, which then extended all over the Northwest, his father dying in the following spring of 1856. In 1860 he was valled to Detroit to take partnership with the house of Oliver Newberry & Co., his unele, who died shortly after, leaving him joint owner of an immense business and large property, as administrator, which he conducted successfully.
U'pon the opening of the Civil War, 1861, without waiting for a commission, he enlisted in the service of the Union with New York troops; was soon made Lieu- tenant; Captain in 1862; Major in 1863; Lieut .- Col. carly in 1864, and Col. of Car- alry in Dec. of same year. In March, 1865, was breveted Brigadier-General by the President, and confirmed by the Senate for distinguished services in the field; com- manded a brigade of cavalry in the Army of the Potomae; was mustered out 1 July, 1865, at the elose of the war, having been four times wounded, and with a most honorable record. He again entered into business, removing to Chicago in 1876, of which city he has been alderman, commissioner of streets, and mayor; is an ardent democrat; president of the Iroquois Club of Chicago for several years: appointed postmaster of that eity under the Cleveland administration, and well known as a wealthy, successful business man, with clear conceptions of duty as a citizen, and marked stability of character. Elected Dem. member to the 52d Con- gress from 4th Dist., Cook Co., Ill. Gen. Newberry is said by the newspapers to be, in personal appearance, the most striking looking man in the House -tall, white-haired, and very handsome. Gen.
