GENEALOGIES AND BIOGRAPHIES OF ANCIENT WINDSOR.
Marcus Lyon (M.D.), 7th s. of Rufus and Irene (Scripture) Fiske, was b. in Willing- ton, Conn., 16 Dee., 1811. Ilis gt .- gd .- fthr., Stephen Fiske, came to W. from Watertown, Mass., the first settlement and home of the name in this country. In Eng. the Fiskes were an ancient Suffolk family, not titled, but of high respecta- bility, bearing a gentleman's coat-of-arms, granted by Henry VI. Lieut. Rufus Fiske, gd .- f. of our subject, was an officer in the Revel. War, one of the early mag- istrates of Willington, and of its first representatives in the State Legislature. Marcus was dependent for educational advantages upon the public schools, the village academy, and private tutors, all of which he improved to the utmost degree. Likewise, as a traditional New Englander, he taught school for several terms at different places in Conn., R. L., and Mass. Deciding upon the medical profession, he made for it a very thorough preparation. After enjoying the preceptorship of Dr. Alden Skinner of Vernon, Conn .. Dr. Robert Grosvenor of Killingly, Conn., and Dr. Win. Grosvenor of Providence, R. L., he completed his course of study at the Berkshire Medical College, Pittsfield, Mass., then an institution of much celebrity. He then went to Philadelphia, and became a private pupil of the distinguished Dr. Geo. MeClellan, founder of both the Jefferson and the Pennsylvania Medical Col- leges. Entering the latter, in which Dr. MeC. was then a Professor, he was grad. with the degree of M. D., 4 Mich., 1842.
lle soon after established himself in East Windsor, Conn., at Broad Brook, where he remained until the autumn of 1864, when, on the death of Dr. Joseph Olmsted of Warehouse Point (E. I'D) and at the solicitation of the people of that part of the town, he rem. thither, spending there the remainder of his life, and dying there ? Apl., 1883.
Among physicians Dr. F. was widely known and honored as a Fellow of the Conn. Med. Society, and as one of its oldest members. An experience of over forty years gained him the best reputation as a practitioner, a reputation which carried his practice also into six or seven of the towns adjoining his own. His splendid skill and talents were always at the service of every one who needed them. He was quick and accurate in diagnosis, sanguine, confident, hope-inspiring to his patients; never at a loss for an expedient; always present-minded and full of resources. To the last, even with Death's hand upon him. he toiled to relieve human suffering. As his biographer (of the Conn. Med. Soc'y) has said of him : "Dr. Fiske was a man of great energy and of more than ordinary ability, com- manding at all times the respect of his associates in the profession, beloved in an uncommon degree by those to whom he administered in their hour of affliction and gloom." East Windsor has had no citizen of more sterling intellectual and moral merit, nor one more worthily endeared to its people. A man of most decided opinions, political and ecclesiastical, which he held regardless of their hearing upon his temporal interests; of entire independence of mind, and of stout moral courage, he was for these very qualities respected, even by those who differed with him most. And, withal, he was a man of great modesty and lowliness of mind, never putting himself forward, nor seeking to sit down in the highest room. Well-read, and unusually versed in history and political science; with a clear and logical mind, and gifted with ready speech, he was repeatedly urged to enter public life; which, however, he resolutely declined.
lle was one who consecrated his calling to the glory of God, and was deeply interested in all religious matters. Reared under Baptist traditions, he was, on reaching manhood, attracted by that branch of the Holy Catholic Church, known in the U. S. as the Prot. Epis. Church, and was confirmed in Grace church Broad Brook, of which he was one of the founders and a vestryman, and, during his con- nection with it, a main support. Subsequently, for many years, he was a vestry- man and warden of St. John's church, at W. Pt. The clergy ever found him a loyal coadjutor, a wise counselor, and a sympathizing friend; and, during his long professional career, he never accepted a fee for his services from a minister of any
