Ile was not only a well- read and shrewd lawyer, but a classical scholar, and taught his children plenty of Latin and Greek. He was a politician of the Jeffersonian school, at a time when polities ran high, and numerous anecdotes are told of his pleasantries. At a Fourth of July dinner he once gave the following toast: "Fit ralists - May they hang by the rim of the moon with their fingers greased!" In the transformation of parties he afterwards, singularly enough, found himself acting with his old antagonists, the federalists, without being fully satisfied with the position he had fallen into by following some file leader. He was some time justice of the peace at Hoosick, which is believed to have been the only public office he ever accepted. Ch .:

FAM. 27. Joel " (Jocl,5 Hez., Elisha,3 Jacob,? Thos.1), was printer, publisher, and antiquarian author at Albany, N. Y. The story of his life has been well given in the N. Y. Gen. and Biog. Rec. for April, 1880. Suffice it to say here that he was a most industrious, genial, and loveable man. Ile loved his chosen art with a fervor worthy of Aldus, Elzevir, or any of the ancient fathers of printing. His interest and sympathy in all genealogical and historical pursuits has impressed his name indelibly upon that department of American literature, and in his Chronology of the Origin and Progress of Paper and Paper-making, and his Annals of Albany in 10 octavo volumes, and Collections on the Hist. of .Whiny, 4 vols., as well as the hun- dreds of elegantly printed historical works from his press, which owed their per- fection to his loving superintendence, he has left his mark high upon the roll of American authors and printers. He was a good friend to and the publisher of the first edition of this list. of Windsor and its Supplement, being, like its anthor, a grandson of that town.

THE NEWBERRY FAMILY.
of an " Uncle, or Captain Newberry, living in Morchard " (now Marchard Bishop), " fifteen miles from Exeter, in Devon. A great deal of weaving is said to have been carried on at this place," and it is said that John of Newberry discovered the art. The weavers' flag used in the Trades' processions in the west of England, on festive occasions, bore for its emblem the picture of John of Newberry weaving in a loom. The Wool-combers' tlag had as its emblem the picture of Bishop Blaise, in canoni- cals, with a wool-comb in his left hand and the Bible in his right .- See illustrations of wool-combing, an old family print-Hist. and Pedigree of the House of Gaillard, by Wm. Gaillard, Cincinnati, Ohio.
According to tradition, also, it is related that in an early day one William of Newberry was the Chronicler of his District, ¿. c., the Recorder of Events for the Government, and that he was a wise and learned man, and that at the date of the adoption of surnames he was granted the distinguished honor (accorded to but one citizen of a town) of taking his name as its own, and he thereupon became William Newberry, and thus established a family, and from it has descended the English and American family of that name.

Thomas, says the Hist. Dorchester, Muss., "one of the earliest settlers and largest landed proprietors of D., rec'd from the Gen. Court a grant of 100 acres on Nepon- set, March, 1634, and many grants from the D. proprietary. He laid out a large farm in Squantum, and built a house there."
Mr. Newberry lived on "the Rock" in 1634, where he became freeman and selectman. In 1635 he was appointed to oversee works at the Castle; was early engaged in the Connecticut enterprise; sold his D. property, and prepared to remove to Windsor, but his death, either in December, 1635, or January, 1636, prevented. His wid. Jane and children removed to Windsor some time before 1639-40. 1lis will (dated 12 Dec.) gave his wife £200, and constitned her his sole executrix, and the rest of his estate to his children. The inventory included land in England, valued at $300. Rev. Mr. Warham and Mr. William Gaylord were made overseers. The record of a Particular Court (Conn.), held March 5, 1639, says: "This present day there was returned into the Court, by Mr. Gaylord, one of the overseers, a copy of the estate of the children of Thomas Newberry, deceased, dated the 10th of Feb., 1639, subscribed by Mr. Ludlow, Mr. Phelps, Mr. Huit, Mr. Hill, George Hull, and Wm. Hosford."
More than thirty years after his death (Feb. 6, 1669) his heirs (represented by his sons-in-law, Mr. Henry Wolcott, Jr., and Mr. Daniel Clark, and by his son, Capt. Benjamin Newberry) presented to the Court "the ancient grant of land to their father, which would have fallen to him [in Windsor] in meadow by [i. e. in proportion to] the estate of his which was brought up [i. e. from England, for the Windsor settlers seem to have received their allotments of Id. in some proportion to the amounts which they had severally expended in this venture of settlement in a new country] which, by account of £700 and his person would have come to 76 acres, and he had but 40 acres in meadow, and it was granted him in Dorchester [i. e. before they left D.] that what was his part in meadow above 40 acres, he
** HENRY S. NEWBERRY of Cleveland, Ohio, has in his possession an old dress sword which was worn by General RUGEn N. on the belt of which is a silver plate, oval, about 4x2 inches, and bearing the Newberry arıns .- ' Sable, three pales argent, on a canton azure n lion rampant, or." My father (Rev. John S. Newberry of N. Y. city) has also a very oll water color of these same arms which has come down in the family for ser- eral generations. Neither the plate nor the picture show a crest. You will note that these arms differ from those usually given to the name, in one particular, viz. : that the lion is full shape instead of "a demi-lion." We have always supposed these arms to belong to us, but I know of no positive evidence on the subject be- yond these two articles. Whether the change in the lion is accidental, or intended, I do not know. If these are our arms, I suppose the usual crest, "an arm proper, vested azure, cuffed or. holding a truncheon gales, lipped, of the third," belongs to na also. . 1. St.John V wberry. Esq .. of Cleveland, Ohio.
