Eliza Prentice (dan. Richard Ely and Elizabeth Lynd) Selden of Lyme, 16 May, 1849; she b 23 Mch., 1830; d. 13 May. 1871, in Hadlyme; (3) Eliza Jane (daughter David and Hullah Pinney) Ellsworth of Windsor, 22 .Jan., 1873; b. 4 Jan., 1837. General Elihu Geer attended school in East Hartford, at the academy; he learned the printer's trade and then carried on job printing for fifty years on State St. He was the author and compiler of Geer's Hartford City Directory (acknowledged the model directory of the world), which also gave a succinct history of the city for those fifty years; impressed himself on the city's life by the power of an ardent, original, and invincibly resolute disposition. He taught the printer's trade to four of his sons, who now conduct the business as the Hartford Printing Co.
He founded the famous Congregationalist in 1839; in two years sold it to a Bos- ton firm; the Literary Harrest in 1840; the Hartford Feening Journal and the Hart- ford Weekly Journal (Whig. Protection, and Henry Clay paper) in 1843; the Conn. Bank Note List in 1849, the first of this kind of papers; a republican in politics, rep resented the town of Lyme in the Conn. Legislature in 1861 and 1870. He was the author of military measures and laws which are the basis of the present militia sys- tem of Conn., and also of other States; from a private he rose to Brigadier-General, and labored for twenty-five years, before the war, to perfect the militia system. foreseeing the certainty of war, which few in the North had any belief would come. lle was a member of the Old North Congregational church, of whose pastor, Dr. Horace Bushnell, he was an ardent admirer. In 1861 he moved his family to Had- lyme; d. Hadlyme, 27 Mch., 1887; was buried by the Knights Templars in the Old North cemetery in Hartford. Children :
